The Lowdown on David Lough

One position the Phillies are not in need of is the outfield, but nonetheless David Lough has been brought into the mix on a minor league pact.  With the starting 3 mapped out as Peter Bourjos, Odubel Herrera, and Aaron Altherr, reserves in the form of Cody Asche and Tyler Goeddel, minor league wunderkinds Nick Williams and Roman Quinn knocking on the door, and Darnell Sweeney on the 40-man roster, Lough's nothing more than a depth piece.  He's a good depth piece at that. Oh, and he's incredibly ripped!

Lough can play all outfield positions and at a high level, having graded out at 3.1 DWAR in parts of 4 MLB seasons with the Royals and Orioles.  His bat is less than ideal, but he's flashed promise here and there.  In 312 games, he's posted a .255/.672 line, being buoyed by a solid 2013-2014.

He's going to have a difficult time cracking the Phillies 25-man roster, but could be a legitimate 5th outfielder option should the Phils trade Cody Asche.  I am in favor of an Asche trade, because he is horrible defensively at both third base and left field.  His bat is average and he is still young at 25, but I'd rather see other players getting playing time heading forward.  Sending him packing for some sorta low level prospect might be what's best for Asche and the organization.
