Bad Jeanmar, Good Otero & Rivera

1. Jeanmar Gomez was thrust into the closer's role out of necessity in April and has stuck there ever since. His first half of the season was fantastic, but the second half has been disastrous.

Pre All-Star Break: 39 G, 24 SV, 2.59 ERA, 1.10 WHIP
Post All-Star Break: 26 G, 12 SV, 5.63 ERA, 1.71 WHIP

It's time to hand over the reigns to Hector Neris in save situations to close out the year and move Jeanmar back into a setup role.
2. Dan Otero was on the Phillies 40-man roster for a minute during the offseason after a waiver claim. However, he was designated for assignment and ended up with the Indians. Cleveland is thankful for the Phils mistake, as Otero has pitched brilliantly over 56 G and 62.1 IP. He sports a sparkling 1.58 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. The Phillies need that type of guy in their bullpen, but instead we suffer through the likes of Luis Garcia, Michael Mariot, Daniel Stumpf, James Russell, Brett Oberholtzer, Elvis Araujo, Adrew Bailey, Patrick Schuster, and Frank Herrmann. Good job Klentak.

3. Remember when I wanted the Phillies to take TJ Rivera in the Rule 5 draft? Well, they took the shitty hitting Tyler Goeddel with their 1st pick instead.  Rivera tore through Triple-A pitching this season (.353/.909 in 105 G) and has continued that trend since his promotion to the Mets (.333/.764 in 17 G). Goeddel, on the other hand, is clearly over-matched (.184/.533 over 90 G). Also, Rivera can play 2nd, 3rd and SS while Goeddel can basically only man corner OF. Good job Klentak. Noticing a pattern yet?

Home run race for Phillies:
Franco 22
Howard 21
Joseph 19
Galvis 19
Rupp 15

who would've thought that Galvis would challenge for team lead in homers? And who thought before spring that Joseph would have been on team?

Franco should have run away with this by now. Look around baseball and homeruns are being hit all over the place. I'm very disappointed in Franco's season. Also, Joseph would have the team lead by now if Mackanin would just stop putting Howard in the lineup. It's ridiculous, Howard had a good 3-4 week stretch, but is back to his swing-and-miss ways. Give the kid all the at bats!!!

Franco simply needs to stop over-swinging.. It's glaringly evident that is his problem.

Crazy as it is Franco has had an ok year but ranks 24th out of 24 in OPS at 3rd base. What that actually says is that the offense that 3rd basemen around the league provides is that much better. 11th in HRs, 12th in RBIs, 22nd in Runs, 16th in SOs, 22nd in Walks, 23rd in BA & OBP.

Offense is up all around baseball, except in the Phillies case.

I'm liking my first impression of Roman Quinn though!

we give up a lot of home runs.

You should have stopped at "we give up"

Phillies bullpen = batting practice for opponents

6 relievers with ERA 5.76 or greater on active roster

Speaking of giving up. Blanco is not having a good game tonight.

Bob D. When you give up a run in an inning pitched, and your ERA goes down, well Houston, we have a problem.

RipJGarcia, that is usually a sign of badness.
Bullpen arms are like a crap shoot (term used by WSBGMs many times)
Giles prime example, 2015 good vs 2016 bad mostly. He did improve last half of season.

Hellickson was a great performance. Overall, he's been pretty damn good this season. Having him back next year would be nice.

First CG Shutout this year for our pitching staff.. Better late than never. Interesting though : the entire staff is tied for third in total shutouts.

Apparently we are now officially a little league team. 5th inning. Pitcher in a little trouble. 73 pitches. Ok, son, take a seat on the bench. Mackanin manages scared.

mackanin is dumb

I laughed when many said Herrera should be traded because he was struggling. I do feel he can be part of the OF mix in the future. Disclaimer: If another team wants to offer a great return then jump on it. Next year I would like to see Herrera, Quinn, and Altherr along with 2 other players in the mix. Goeddel in AAA, Asche, Ruf, and Paredes all may or may not be tendered a contract depending if they need those roster spots. Cozens and Williams will be a phone call away in AAA to start season along with Osmel Aguila (Cuban player who made it to AAA) and Andrew Pullin (who dominated AA in 46 games).

Asche, Ruf, and Paredes should be non-tendered.

Buying low on a possible bounce back candidate in the OF might be worth a shot: Carlos Gomez, Chris Coghlan, Colby Rasmus (depending on their price tags).
