Ryan Howard is the Worst

Enough is enough. The Ryan Howard Golden Era has long past and now the Phillies are stuck with a slug that can't slug anymore. A $25M slug (not to mention a $10M buyout of his 2017 option). Yuck. I wasn't for releasing him before the season began, because I held out hope that he could still handle right-handed pitching. Boy, have I been wrong (.159/.614 in 107 at bats). Now is the time, the time to release Ryan Howard.  Even ESPN.com thinks it's time.

Not only can Ryan Howard no longer hit (.156/.595), he also can't play defense or run the bases. He's the epitome of terrible. Mackanin's erroneous decision to continue to bat him cleanup is inexcusable. Klentak's decision to continue giving him a home on the roster has become insufferable.

It's time to give Tommy Joseph the full-time first base job and sit him against tough right-handed pitchers by giving Andres Blanco some reps over there. It's hard to imagine them performing worse than Howard. Joseph has already proven he can play better defense and at only 24 years old, still has room for growth in all facets of his game.

*Side note - I appreciate everything Ryan Howard has meant to the Philadelphia Phillies organization. It's a shame Amaro ever signed him to that unwarranted and premature extension. Had Howard been let go to free agency following 2011, we'd have a far better memory of him.

Give it time, If Joseph keeps hitting he will be the starter. No need to remove Howard until there is a AAA player deserving a promotion.

Darin Ruff gets 25 at bats and Ryan Howard does nothing. I believe Ruff should be up and Howard waived as much as I love Ryan Howard. He is not helping the team.

I'd rather see Cam Perkins on the team playing some OF and 1B. He doesn't have power, but he's typically hit for average in the minors, which has it's value too.

The people supporting Howard in the comments of that ESPN article crack me up.

People think the Phillies still owe it to Howard to play him and let him leave gracefully...not releasing him. Those people are idiots. The only thing the Phillies owe Howard is the remaining money on his contract and a thank you for the good years he had. This is a business, not f'n tball where everyone get a trophy.

Keep an eye on Knapp in AAA. If he starts hitting for higher average he would be the most likely candidate to replace Howard on roster as 3rd catcher, 1B, corner OF super utility guy. So far he has been ok not great with average but is hitting for power. Once Alfaro tears up AA and is ready for promotion, Knapp could get bumped up a level. If he regresses he could get bumped down a level. The other option is a Ruf reunion

Alfaro is tearing up Double-A. It's time to challenge him in AAA.

Howard's average went up, but OPS went down with just a single. He stinks.

Phillies regression to mediocre has begun. I hope they can pull out of it but they face the Cubs next and they are in a class by themselves. Nola should give them a good chance today, but the offense is weak all too often.

The Phillies are not a good team. You can't be a good team with an offense as inept as they have. The pitching is decent, but unfortunately not good enough to sustain almost complete lack of run support.
