Everyone remembers the World F'n Champions of 2008. Those days are long gone, as the Phillies have been 7-22 since August 24th and are on the verge of 100 losses. Maybe they could use a little magic from some old friends...or should I say "Phriends"?
Blanton began the season in KC, but is now with Pittsburgh. He's been a nice multi-inning reliever, having pitched in 33 games, 4 of them starts, and has racked up 74 strikeouts over 71.1 innings with a 7-2 record, a 3.03 ERA, and a 1.15 WHIP. Also, it's pretty cool that he's now a Phucco (Phillies + Bucco = Phucco). He'll turn 35 years old in December, but he's probably lined himself up for a 1 year pact in the neighborhood of $2M.
Madson, who just turned 35 in August, is back to being as dominant as ever. He's appeared in 64 games and pitched 59.1 innings with 54 strikeouts, a 2.28 ERA, and 0.98 WHIP. Due to his age and history of injuries, a 2 year deal is unlikely. However, a team like Detroit, in desperate need of bullpen help, would be wise to give him 1 YR/$4M with an option year and plug him into the closer role.
