Papelbon Out

One of the best closers of all-time switched teams yesterday, from the basement dwelling Phillies to the top rung of the ladder Nationals.  Jonathan Papelbon was as much of a Grade-A douchebag as he was a save machine.  Constantly running his mouth to the media, asking to be traded, grabbing his crotch towards the fan base, and what have you.  He leaves behind the franchise saves record of 123 saves in his tenure with the Phils. He did the job he was signed to do and did it well.  He now goes to a contender, will be handed the ball in the 9th, and still gets his millions guaranteed next season ($11M instead of $13M though).  Amaro agreed to gift Washington with $4.5M of his remaining salary for the 2015 season.
Jonathan Papelbon Career: 37-30, 630 G, 667 IP, 761 K, 342 SV, 2.32 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 23.7 WAR.

Jonathan Papelbon Phillies: 14-11, 234 G, 237.2 IP, 252 K, 123 SV, 2.31 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 4.5 WAR.

The player the Phillies received in return was the 10th or 12th (depending on who ranks) ranked prospect in the Nationals system.  Nick Pivetta is a 22 year old Canadian 6'5" right-handed starting pitcher.  Since being drafted in the 4th round in 2013, he's compiled a 21-15 record over 53 G, 50 GS, and 267.2 IP, to go along with 201 K, a 3.60 ERA, and 1.31 WHIP.  His fastball sits in the mid 90's and he was recently promoted to Double-A.  He seems like an okay kid, but I would have thought kicking in that much money towards Pap's contract, coupled with the fact the Pap is still an elite closer, would have brought back a better return. I'm only a wannabe GM though...
So who goes next? Jeff Francoeur, Cole Hamels, Ben Revere, Carlos Ruiz, Ryan Howard?

Hmaels likely going to Rangers. Can't wait to see what crappy "prospects" package Amaro gets. Bet he effs it up as much as the Lee trade. He's just stupid.

Alec Asher, Jerad Eickhoff, Jake Thompson are 3 minor league pitchers the Phillies got in the Hamels deal. All 3 have 4.00+ ERA this season, but apparently this is a good trade for the Phils. Bullshit. They got stuck with Matt Harrison's contract at $13M for 3 more years too.

At least they got rid of Jake Diekman.

Outfielder Nick Williams seems legit though.

Deal just doesn't seem good to me.

I'm tired of pitching prospects. They have about 10 guys that seem exactly the same now.

Jorge Alfaro, catcher, might be part of the deal too. That will definitely help.

Arghh, yes, looks like all 4 pitchers are non-impact. The cather is a WIP and possibly can be good, but who knows? Maybe Williams can be a Howard replacement. Seems like he can hit hard. I hate prospects though. Why can't we ever just trade a real talent for another real talent? Why's it always have to be talent for a bunch of guys who may or may not (but more than likely not) become talent in 2-3 years?

One positive to come out of the trade deadline, now Blanton is a Phucco.

Williams seems like the best of the bunch to me an outfielder with good power, some speed, and can hit for average and OBP. Alfaro has scary strike out to walk ratio with very good power. Meaning I see him as someone who will hit a decent amount of homers with low average and high strike outs. However he has a cannon for an arm. Knapp will likely out hit Alfaro just with less power and Lino may be better defensively.
Thompson, Asher, Eickhoff all join the Lively-Eflin-Windel-Biddles of the farm system. Thompson had a great 2014 and has good potential of being a better starter in majors. I'm expecting Kilome and Pinto to actually jump over all of them to top of Phils prospects in the next year anyway (they are really good).
Harrison is the wild card, injured for last 3 years and still under a pricey contract for 2 more years after 2015. He had 2 good years in the AL, if he can return to that form he could even better in NL. He is an upgrade over most of the current rotation.

If Williams was not part of the deal I would be mad - I do think he will be the best of the bunch.
