I Love the 90's

One of the 1990's relics has recently retired from Major League Baseball; Bruce Chen debuted with the Atlanta Braves back in 1998. He played a couple seasons with the Phillies back-in-the-day. In honor of Chen's career, WSBGMs is going to take a moment to reflect on MLB veterans still in the game that made their debut in the 90's.  It is something to celebrate, because like it or not, players don't last as long nowadays due to PED testing and suspensions.

Jeff Francoeur is a fun guy to have on this club. He loves playing the game and it shows. He's no star, but he sure is a quality reserve player. Having a very good year for the Phillies.

AJ Burnett with an All Star appearance this year too. He loves Pittsburgh.

Even though Francoeur has trade value I would not be upset to see him given a 2yr contract extension to be starting RF with a lefty option able to step in once in a while for him.

GM-Carson said...

No extension, he's too fluky year to year. 4th outfielder again next year would be fine though.

Edwin Jackson just designated for assignment by Cubs. Still signed through next year, so he could be had at league minimum. Worth a shot.

re-sign this guy. i completely forgot about this game..

Bob D said...

RipJGarcia, I was at that game it was crazy. Started in upper deck of the Vet by 2nd game we all sat in the lower level. 2 rain delays and I believe both games went extra innings too

Bob D said...

Oh and I think it was like $7 for an upper deck ticket for the 2 games.

GM-Carson said...

I remember back in late 90's early 00's it was $8 for 700 level, but you could always eventually move down. Also, true double headers were great, used to go whenever I could.

Frenchy having another good game. I am a fan of Sabermetrics, they tell most of the story when it comes to success in baseball, but not all. There's the human element, and that's where Francoeur thrives. He is a pleasure to watch play.

Bob D said...

Francoeur just turned 31 and is on pace for one of his better seasons. He is a 262 career hitter (263 this year) and averages 18Hrs (8 this year/24 if he played whole season). They could go 2 different ways: 1 is trade him for hopefully a decent prospect that has good upside but also has a lot of risk, or 2 hang on to him. I think he could be a starter again or a 4th OF/pinch hitter on a really good team. But I wonder if they hang on to him if he could be their RF for the next couple of years. The next few OF prospects that should come up hopefully in next year are Alther, Perkins, and Quinn with Quinn being the best of them. Carlos Tocci a year behind them may even be better than them. If he goes anywhere hopefully the Pirates can grab him.

GM-Carson said...

Don't forget Kelly Dugan. He's a natural hitter, just needs to stay healthy.

Poor Aaron Nola, Phillies getting 2 hitted by a guy named after a grocery store.

From what I've heard, he is mature enough to deal with this and realize his place in the future of this organization.

GM-Carson said...

He looked great. 6 innings, 1 r, 6 base runners, 6 K, and 1-2 at the plate. Well done kid.
