Bullpen, We Have a Problem

With not much to look forward to this offseason, fans clamored about the blossoming Phillies bullpen.  Nearly everyone called it a strength and many thought it would be one of the best in baseball.  There are plenty of games remaining to be played, but in the early going, the Phils relief corps have been disastrous.

Just how bad?  I'll tell you...

4 out of the 7 bullpen members' WHIP ranks in the bottom 20 of all MLB for relief pitchers.
*Rank out of 169
Jake Diekman - 2.44 (167th)
Dustin McGowan - 1.80 (155th)
Justin DeFratus -  1.78 (154th)
Jeanmar Gomez - 1.75 (151st)

Overall, Philadelphia relievers rank dead last in all of baseball in terms of WHIP (1.61).  They've allowed 106 baserunners via hit or walk in 65.2 innings.  This isn't just a problem, it's a PROBLEM!

On Base % for each reliever by batters:
Diekman 460
McGowan 386
Gomez 378
DeFratus 373
Giles 333
Garcia 324
Papelbon 194

Unearned runs also don't count into their ERA but it also shows that when an error occurs the pitchers still can't compensate and shut down the next hitter(s)
Giles has allowed 6 unearned runs and DeFratus with 3, while Gomez and Diekman 1 each.

I have also noticed that some pitchers are allowing a lot of inherited runners to score Garcia included in that.

Basically, they stink.

I find the Cardinals to be the most annoying team in baseball. Not sure why, but I definitely do.

Lehigh Valley Ironpigs fell to 5-16 on the season. Just another rung on the ladder of a losing organization.

Reading is the measuring stick - they have the real prospects for the most part.

Clearwater and Lakewood also look fairly good with prospects.

But where the immediate help is in AAA - they don't look very good.

All winter long we heard all kinds of Hamels rumors with nothing happening. However this time I think there may just be some actual progress right now that something may be coming together. Not sure what team but there are like 5 teams that could seriously do it.

If not hold on to him for 4 years and he will be the veteran ace starter of the team. So in my opinion not trading him is a win, while a trade could be a win. But Gillick made bold moves that brought a champion previously.

Pitching is great, but it's time Amaro start getting some young bats back in trades. The Phillies offense is horrible.

24 year old Cuban 3B/OF Yasmany Tomas, who Amaro passed on, is off to a nice start to his career- .333/.804 in 11 games.

Amaro sucks at life!

Billingsly is lined up to pitch next time Buchannan's turn comes around. I'm thinking S Gonzalez will get another turn in rotation.

O'Sullivan is already slated to start Sunday.

Ramon Hernandez need to start Sunday. He allowed 23 homers to Ryan Howard in the 2006 home run derby
