Entering Spring Training, David Buchanan was unjustly vying for the 5th spot in the rotation. As a rookie, he pitched fairly well, posting a 3.75 ERA/1.29 WHIP over 117.2 IP in 20 games started. Outside of Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee, the projected rotation was blah, so giving the young and still developing Buchanan the ball every 5th day on a rebuilding club seemed like a no-brainer. However, he was being pushed into a competition with multi-million dollar bust Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and non-roster invitee Kevin Slowey. Unfortunately, Lee is likely out for the season, but fortunately Buchanan is there to help fill the void. And, he's proving he belonged all along.
Buchanan Spring Stats:
5 G, 2-0, 16 IP, 11 K, 0 BB, 1.69 ERA, and a 0.75 WHIP. Boo-yah!
I'm not predicting a Cy Young-esque performance outta him, but 185+ IP and a similar 3.75 ERA to last season is well within reason. I'm a fan, or better yet, PHAN. Ha, see what I did there?
