I think they need to include the playoff schedule
As much as I wish Ryan Howard was not in Phillies pinstripes, I am not for releasing him. I keep reading talk about it from the beat writers and it scares me. Nobody on the roster can put up the numbers he will. Howard isn't good any more, but neither is anybody else in the Phillies system. Nobody is knocking on the first base door. Might as well let him play this year and see if he does slightly better and thus increase trade value. 1 year of Howard for a team is much more palatable than 2 years.
If Ruf or someone else can unseat him from first then so be it. But yes he is the best option right now until proven otherwise. Now what will every one say if he puts up 40 homers? He could but not likely
I could see a Ruf / Howard platoon and one that could be productive
If Howard hits something like .240/.775 with 25 HR and 90 RBI he'll get traded, especially with only 1 year left on his contract.
Aaron Harang(-utan) is the answer to all our woes...
1 Year/$5M is a decent deal for Harang. If he pitches like he did last season, he's good trade bait come July. Cross your fingers.
