Pence Trade Revisited (AKA - Amaro is Dumb)

Former Phillies prospect Jonathan Singleton/1B made his MLB debut yesterday for the Houston Astros and collected The Howard as well.  2 errors, 2 strike outs, and 1 homerun.  Way to go kid!

Singleton was sent to Houston in a 4 player package for Hunter Pence.  Jarred Cosart was the first of the four to reach the Majors, and he's now made 24 starts since mid-2013 with a 3.07 ERA,  a 5-5 record, and a 3.4 WAR (he'd look nice in the Phillies rotation!).  Joshua Zeid also made his MLB debut last season and has made 32 relief appearances with a 3.89 ERA and 0.5 WAR (he'd look good in the Phillies bullpen!).  Domingo Santana/OF is the only one that hasn't reached the Majors, but he's currently killing it in Triple-A (.298/.869 as a 21 year old).

I think it's fair to say Amaro got ripped off in this trade, much like he did in the Cliff Lee trade to the Mariners, the Victorino trade to the Dodgers, and the Pence trade to the Giants.  He's a shitty GM, and I feel the need to constantly point that out.  The Phillies have the 3rd highest payroll in baseball, but 5th worst record (2nd worst run differential at -48).  Seriously, how does this moron have a job?  He took over a team at the top and has consistently driven them further down in the standings, year after year.

If Singleton reaches his full potential, the Pence trade will go down as the worst in baseball history.

Let's say RAJ never trades Lee (and therefore never has to trade for Oswalt), never trades for Pence and never extends Howard. You get this:

1B: Jonathan Singleton, or perhaps you cash in on his stock with a later trade and have Brandon Moss
Rest of Lineup: Same
Rotation: Lee, Hamels, Burnett, Cosart, Kendrick(Two Aces,a #2, a #3, and a #4)
Bullpen: Papelbon, Adams, Zeid, Hollands, Deikman, Bastardo, Open Spot.
Bench: Anthony Gose, Jonathan Villar, Mayberry, Hernandez, Nieves.

With all the savings from Howard, one could easily have signed some other worthwhile reviler. Taking a look at that, that might not be a playoff team but it's definitely a winning team and you have a fine core of Singleton, Cosart, Asche(Franco, and the still relatively young Hamels to build the next gen Phillies team around.

Those three moves: The Lee Trade (because it lead to the Oswalt trade, which was good in context but shouldn't have needed to happen), Pence Trade #1, and the Howard Extension, are what killed the franchise. For all RAJ's other boneheaded moves, I do not think they are the long term cause of the Phillies' decent into what looks to be 5+ years of irrelevancy.

I wonder if anybody in the industry respects Amaro. I would think that he's generally lookwd at as a dumbass that likes to blow his load on big moves that end up biting him in the ass.

Corey to help with the positive Obama doesn't seem to be as good as Amaro in making trades. NNow all kidding aside Morak makes a great point. Other moves were made in reaction to previous moves.

I will make a prediction here for the outfield:
By August it will be Brown, Ruf, Asche (FRANCO at 3rd), Sudsdorf, & another player not on team splitting time. Only one of Byrd, Revere, Mayberry, & Gwynn may possibly remain. Expect big changes here

This Pence trade may end up as a top three worst trade in baseball history.

The Roy Halladay trade was smart... but yeah, the rest kind of crapped the bed. And yes, if the Phils had won another WS, we wouldn't be so hard on trades like for Pence. But we didn't win, so let the criticism roll...

Can't wait for the Reds preview. Best chance for a win is Cole Hamels in game 1 he is 1-3 4.01 ERA but he win be opposed by Cuerto who has 5 wins and a 1.68 ERA. Games 2 and 3 have the Reds throwing starters out there with 7 and 6 wins each as the Phillies will have 2 players throw batting practice. Maybe they can sign Nola (1st round pick) and have him in Cincinnati by Saturday. Or maybe just have the pitching coach throw a few innings or bring back Wilson Valdez! Oh yeah for hitting, they team saved airfare by leaving the bats back in Philly.

Actually you may copy and paste, since that will likely be the results with another 3 game sweep.

Can't wait for the exhilarating fight between Philadelphia, Houston ChiChubs, Arizona, and Tampa for the #1 pick next year.

Houston is on the way up, passing the Phillies soon.

Unless a good winning streak hits quickly - they will go into sell mode. Phillies could get a top 5 pick next year

Is it any surprise that Ed Wade was the one who traded Pence and Oswalt to the Phillies. I can't help but think that He went to Amaro and said throw in this and this guy, you guys are great and we suck, nobody will ever miss them or something like that. I mean no GM can be that idiotic, four players for one, it's not like we are talking about a Pujols or a Trout. Ed Wade reminisced with Amaro, softened him up, then picked his pocket.
