Let's Get It On- Nationals Series Preview

Washington Nationals (16-12) @ Philadelphia Phillies (13-13)

Pitching Match-Ups:
Friday, 7:05 - Stephen Strasburg vs. Cliff Lee
Saturday, 7:05 - Tanner Roark vs. Sport Hernia Burnett
Sunday, 3:05 - Gio Gonzalez vs. Cole Hamels

Gnats Bats:
R - 126 (8th)
AVG - .259 (9th)
OPS - .743 (5th)

Harper out.  Zimmerman out.  Werth/RF (.288/.845) in.  LaRoche/1B (.312/.907) in.  Anthony Rendon/3B (.316/.896) in. Danny Espinosa/2B (.288/.828) in.  This lineup is well balanced and not to be taken lightly, even with the absences of their top two stars.

Gnats Arms:
ERA - 3.16 (6th)
WHIP - 1.27 (14th)

Some fantastic pitching match-ups this series.  Roark is the surprise of the group, posting a 2.76 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.  Strasburg is striking batters out with high frequency (53 K in 34 IP).  Gonzalez is just consistently good.  Bullpen is decent too, with closer Rafael Soriano yet to allow a run and the group of Aaron Barrett, Drew Storen, and Ross Detwiler all sporting ERA south of 2.00.  And then there's workhorse Tyler Clippard, up to his usual shenanigans (14 G, 12.2 IP, 18 K, 2.84 ERA).

What I'm Drinking:
Yuengling Lager.  I'm not really a fan of this beer, as I don't care for lagers much, especially those with a sweet caramel malty profile.  However, I'm at a wedding on Saturday and it's between this and Coors Light, so I'd rather go local than drink piss water.

Prediction:
Tough fought series, but Hamels is still rusty and the Nationals seem to have the Phillies number over the past couple seasons, so I'm going with only 1 win for the good guys over the weekend.

And there is the bullpen doing what they do best with a 1 run lead.

Shitty ass bullpen. The biggest reason the Phillies won't contend this season.

Unfortunately there are very few improvements within the organization for the bullpen. They didn't sign Hanrahan who would have helped most likely.

Last night we saw Diekman let up runs, then all of a sudden strikes out the side. I think he did that last week too. It maybe time to send him down to fix whatever is wrong before the season slips away.

Cody Asche better start looking over his shoulder as Franco had another multi hit game in AAA. He has now been hitting well over the last 11 games and with power. If he keeps that up he could be in Philly soon.

Crap production from 3rd base is an issue, but the biggest issue is the crap bullpen. Papelbon and nobody else.

Phillies minor leaguer Willians Astudillo is the anti-Howard. He doesn't have any power, but he's also only struck out 26 times in 790 at bats, all while batting .319

A couple of minor leaguers are turning heads, namely JP Crawford. However many are not so far.

As for the bullpen, maybe the starters can relieve each others games and use the pen when KK and Hernandez start only.

Here's food for thought: Let's say Howard, Lee, and Hamels are all signed for only $20 Million instead of 25, 25, and 22. Imagine what could have been done for that 'pen with the extra $12 million dollars.

Morak has a good point there

OK 5-0 in 5th with Burnett at 77 pitches, how many more runs do they need to score to win when its turned over to the pen?
