First Howard of the Season

You might think that we here at WSBGMs would be celebrating the Phillies first win of the season.  We are.  But, more importantly, we are celebrating the first Howard of the 2014.  Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants' Brandon Belt on belting a homerun, striking out, and committing an error all in the same game.  Doubtful he remains on top all season long, but for now he is king of the mountain. *Standings listed on the right sidebar of the blog.

Meanwhile, Ryne Sandberg is trying some new ideas out this year, batting Ryan Howard 5th against lefties and starting Jayson Nix at 3rd in place of Cody Asche.

No offense to Jeff Manship, Mario Hollands, and BJ Rosenberg, but a playoff caliber team doesn't carry 3 pitchers like that in their bullpen unless it's September. Hell, throw in Brad Lincoln too. Each would be ok as last man on the pitching staff, but the Phils are relying on them. Not gonna end well.

Sorry I know are bullpen ain't great but Sandberg played a major role in losing that game last night. I liked putting Howard in the 5 hole......That's the only good decision he made last night.
Playing Mayberry and Nix in the 2nd game of the season over Ashe is a joke! Nice that you wanna keep the bench fresh but getting playing time for Nix should NOT be a priority particular in GAME 2 of the season.
Diekman being allowed to face Beltre horrible decision, we all knew what was about to happen and it did. Why no faith in Defratus? Not only not bringing him in to face the righty but he didn't even have anyone warming in the pen...?????? WTF?
Hollands making his debut in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game on the road against the top of the lineup???? WTF??
And why the hell does he think Blow J Rosenberg is the solution to anything????
Sandberg needs to be better than that or he's going to lose a lot of games for this team. That was just bad. Really seriously bad.

Aaron. Using wifes account.

I like that Sandberg isn't afraid to switch things up, but so far as a strategic manager, he has not impressed me.

Rosenberg has some decent potential and Diekman is one of the better young relievers. But there was definitely better options or fresher arms than keep throwing the same guys out there each night.

I've already seen FAR to much of John Mayberry Jr. and it's only game 3.

GM-Carson said...

Why is the SS covering 2nd when the runner from first is going on the pitch when a right-handed batter is up at the plate. Andrus hits a soft grounder right where Nix would have been.

And why isn't Howard batting 5th tonight too against the lefty?

Nikole said...

What a great Signing Jayson Nix was said nobody ever.

Nikole said...

I was just about to say Ryan Howard should never play against a lefty ever.......
Or maybe he should.......no he really still shouldn't

Brown looks lost so far this season.

Nikole said...

ARE YOU FING KIDDING ME SANDBERG!! HOLLANDS AGAIN AGAINST THE SAME FREAKIN HITTERS???
Im already, ready for a new manager.

Morak99 said...

YOU SCUK PAPELBON! YOU SUCK!

Morak99 said...

I'm so angry I can;t even spell.

Nikole said...

i hate Paplebon. I hope he gets injured. Because I can't watch him blow games anymore. Ridiculous.

Bob D said...

Implosion uhg. Kk did well

Anthony said...

Why did Nix play two entire games? I'm ready for them to bring back Charlie because he was better at strategy (I can't freaking believe it).

Andrew said...

Nix played because Rollins is away for his child's birth. Lets focus our anger where it should be focused: on that idiot Papelbon. He's done

GM-Carson said...

Now we're seeing why the Cubs never gave Sandberg a Major League gig.

Andrew said...

are you blaming him for playing his closer in the ninth with a 3 run lead? Or for not pulling him when he struggled? You know Charlie would have "stood by his man" the same way

Andrew said...

"The whole inning was kind of just one of those innings," Papelbon said. "You get a cue ball down the third-base line, then you get a double play ball you think is a game-ending double play. It's not. Just one of those innings."

Way to take responsibility for your own actions, ass clown. Just one of those innings? What about the two consecutive walks that lost the game? Who's fault was that?

Bob D said...

I'll give Sandberg some time, it is the players that still have to execute what they are suppose to. It should only take a few weeks to see what kind of bad trends/tendencies he has as a manager. And almost all have at least one.

GM-Carson said...

No, I'm not blaming him for using Papelbon. That's alll on Papel-douche!

Andrew said...

At least Lidge would admit he sucked after games when he sucked. Papelbon has no class. None.

Anthony said...

In addition to the cue shot, Papelbon also allowed two lasers because he hung the pitches.

Bob D said...

Its one blown save / lets see if the trend continues. It will be worrisome if they continue to lose winnable games with various failures as we have seen already

Andrew said...

Trend? This HAS been the trend for the past 6 months or so of Paps. He also didn't have a good Spring, if I recall. I'm not confident he ever regains full form.

Morak99 said...

Time for Roberto Hernandez at Wrigley Field! Yuk yuk yuk. Hope he proves me wrong.

GM-Carson said...

Papelbon was trending like this last season. That with his salaty os why no team wants to trade for him.

Nikole said...

How bad is Jayson Nix???? What a garbage pickup

Nikole said...

dude.....Sandberg continues to suck. Hernandez is looking pretty damn good with one out in the 6th and a pretty low pitch count so he pulls him???
I hated the way Cholly ran his bullpen I think Sandberg might actually be worse.....Like a lot worse.

Nikole said...

I hope Sandberg was paying attention there in the top of the 7th. Justin Defratus is one of our better bullpen options. Not sure why Sandberg doesn't seem to see that?

Nikole said...

bottom 7th i mean.

A lot of positives today.
Nice games for Chase, Brown, chooch and Mayberry was used how he should always be used which is a pinch hitter against a lefty.....NOT I repeat NOT as a starting outfielder!!

Nice job by the pen with the exception of Bastardo with two ridiculous walks up by four runs.

Nice game for Hernandez. The starters not named Lee have been very good so far. Had Ruben signed anyone in the offseason for the bullpen we would be 4-0 right now. You suck Rube.

Hopefully Cliff can get his Shit together tomorrow and If Burnett has another good game maybe we can actually have a home opener in which we actually have a winning record for a change.

Bob D said...

Papelbon had good stats in Spring, however he also had 5 Unearned runs allowed which shows his stats look better than what he actually did. So if he can not fix it soon, we may see a new closer in the near future.

Ruiz may be the best number 2 hitter on the team.

Nix looks like he maybe the one cut loose when Galvis returns instead of Hernandez.

Agreed Mayberry is not a starting OF, when he did some pinch hitting and platooning a couple of years ago he did well. That was when people said he should get more playing time.

Howard actually looks pretty good in the early going. He may have a lot of strikeouts, but he is also driving the ball well. Just missed a double with runners on base due to good CF play today.

Utley and Byrd have done well too. Not sold on Brown and Asche just yet.

Beer-a-Thon said...

I think Brown is gonna be a bust this season.
