Over/Under- the Bullpen

Last of the 2014 preseason previews is the Phillies bullpen. Look for it to include 6th starter types like Jonathan Pettibone, Jeff Manship, Ethan Martin, and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. As well as, Jonathan Papelbon, Antonio Bastardo, Jake Diekman, BJ Rosenberg, Shawn Camp, Brad Lincoln, Mike Adams, Justin DeFratus, among others.

Pros: High K's per 9, young with upside, not much else.

Cons: Too many unknowns, includes one prick (Papelbon), one PED abuser (Bastardo), and one highly priced brittle setup man (Adams).

WSBGMs 2014 Projections for Phillies Bullpen:
20-31, 504 IP, 473 K, 35 SV, 3.78/1.32, 13 GS

WSBGMs 2014 Projections for Phillies Pitching Staff:
76-86, 1440 IP, 1262 K, 35 SV, 3.84/1.26

I like the Rotation if Hamels Arm does not fall off.

#3 Burnett vs Halladay/Kendrick
#4 Kendrick vs Pettibone
#5 FaustoRoberto vs Lannen/Cloyd/Martin

Really could be much better.

As for the Bullpen, it is hard for it to get any worse, all the innings given to:

Valdez/Garcia/J.C.Ramirez/Rosenburg/Stutes/Durbin!

vs Adams - Camp - Lincoln - Martin - Bastardo

Should be better.

Time to play the starting line-up and bench hitters.

They better bring Ruf North with them.

Bench (5)
C Nieves/Rupp
IF Galvis/Brignac (I would let Galvis start full time at AAA it is a cab fare away)
OF Mayberry (CF backup)

OF/1B Ruf
IF Frandsen
PH Abreu

Abreu lefthanded bat is not more valuable than Ruf.

If he was hitting, it might be more valuable than Frandsen.

Ruf has to make the team. Honestly, if he was a given a full season of at bats, he quite possibly could be their most productive hitter (OPS wise).

Rivalry?
In 3 spring games, the Pirates have hit 8 Phillies batters, and the Phillies 4 Pirates batters.

Javy Guerra just designated for assignment by the Dodgers. I'd scoop him up in a heartbeat. Could be a nice 6/7th inning guy for the Phils.

I see the bench as Nieves over Rupp as they can put him in AAA. Galvis will make it as they really like him. Too bad he isn't hitting. Ruf, Areu, Frandsen and maybe Mayberry. Mayberry is hitting decent - which many on team are not, but I am hoping for more of an upgrade at that spot.
