Over/Under- Phillies Bench

The Phillies first Spring Training game was played today against the Blue Jays, meaning we're about a month away from Opening Day. To celebrate, WSBGMs is previewing most of the players expected to be on the Phillies 25-man roster, either as individuals (ex- starting position players) or as groups (ex- bullpen and bench). Today the we focus on the offensive reserves, the bench.

Bench: Wil Nieves, Darin Ruf, Bobby Abreu, Kevin Frandsen, John Mayberry Jr., Freddy Galvis, Cesar Hernandez, Ronny Cedeno, and Tony Gwynn Jr. Obviously all these guys won't make the team outta Spring Training, but most can be counted upon to make an appearance during the 2014 season.

Pros: Good at bats versus lefties from Frandsen, Ruf, and Mayberry.

Cons: Predominantly low on base percentages, lacks pop outside of Ruf, little versatility outside of Galvis, not much of a left-handed threat.

WSBGMs 2014 Projections for Phillies Bench:
.235/.665, 105 R, 43 DBL, 32 HR,100 RBI, 10 SB.

WSBGMs 2014 Projections for Phillies Offense:
.261/.719, 705 R, 252 DBL, 35 TRPL, 140 HR, 663 RBI, 107 SB.

Assuming health (hahahahaha), the Phillies offense will improve by nearly 40 points in OPS and 100 runs. That would lead to more wins for sure.

Bench bats Ruf and Mayberry both went deep in today's loss to the BJs.

I expect at least 1 DL stint from every starter except Revere and Asche. Fun times ahead!
