Good & Bad News- Brought to you by Burnett/Hamels

Good News:
AJ Burnett has signed a 1 YR/$16M deal with the Phillies that has a mutual option for 2015.  While it's true that Amaro has added yet another aging player to the roster, this time he was wise in doing so.  Allan James Burnett is a 37 year old right-handed starting pitcher that has been with the Marlins, Yankess, Blue Jays, and Pirates over his 15 year career that began in Florida back in 1999.  Career record of 147-132 with a 3.99 ERA/1.32 WHIP over 2353.2 innings.  He was great in Pittsburgh the last 2 years: 26-21, 3.41/1.23, 393.1 IP, 389 K, and only 29 HR allowed.

I feel AJ will be loved by fans, because he pitches with a fiery determination and has the mound presence of recently retired Roy Halladay. This also creates competition in the rotation.  Burnett, Hamels, and Lee are locks, and KK probably is too.  However, should he slip, any of Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (the enigma from Cuba), Pettibone, and Fausto Roberto Carmona Hernandez will step in.  Bonus- he's now officially a Phucco!

Bad News:
Cole Hamels is 8-10 days behind schedule and announced he will not be ready for Opening Day due to shoulder/bicep tendinitis.  Translation- he'll need surgery and only make 5-7 starts in 2014.  Seriously though, this is worrisome.  The man has logged a lot of innings and the Phillies have invested tons of money in his arm.  Get well soon Cole!

Just a thought:
Sign the recently released Emilio Bonifacio and trade Mayberry for anything.

Bonifacio is a switch hitter and can play all over the field, including center field. Plenty of speed and would be a potential left-handed bat off the bench should Abreu prove to be a bust.

Phillies released Chad Gaudin as he failed his physical. Oh well.

Probably good to release anyone named Chad.
Hamels with minor injury equals lawn mowing accident and he lost his pitching arm.
Mayberry will likely go for salary relief and give someone else a chance.

Love the Burnett signing really helps rotation
