The Howard, Clearwater Hitters & Strange Double Header

The Howard- anytime a player hits a homerun, strikes out, and commits an error in the same game.

Dan Uggla and his Braves are off to a hot start. Uggla leads the Majors in Howards, while the Braves seem to win every game. Atlanta is 12-1, leaving the Phillies 6 games out of 1st place already.  They've launched a MLB leading 25 homeruns, are scoring 5.2 runs per game, and have 1.83 ERA.  This team could get stronger too, once Freeman and McCann return from the DL and Heyward and BJ Upton start hitting.  Yikes!

Clearwater Hitters:
The Clearwater Threshers, Phils Single-A team, scored 15 runs and collected 27 hits yesterday.  That's craziness.  It was good to see some of the Phillies minor leaguers hit, because up and down through the organization, offense has been paltry.

Strange Double Header:
Through 8 and a half innings last night, the Phillies and Reds put zeroes on the scoreboard. Then the sky opened up and let loose, relieving the fans in attendance from an otherwise boring game (4 hits total, each team with 2 apiece). Phillippe Aumont will begin the bottom of the 9th today in Cincinnati at 5:30, which will be the conclusion of the suspended game. Then, at 7, the teams will start the final game of the series.

From BeerLeaguer:
• Ben Revere has a .258 OBP. The NL average for leadoff batters is .355.

• Revere has beaten out 2 of 33 ground balls.

• Revere is on pace to strike out 115 times. He struck out 100 times in three years with the Twins.

• Revere hit .355 in the first inning last year. He has two hits in 14 plate appearances in the first this year, and has scored one run.

• Joey Votto has more walks (21) than Revere, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Domonic Brown, Laynce Nix and Erik Kratz combined.

• Yuniesky Betancourt has more RBIs than every Phillie except Utley.

• The Phillies have hit .184/.241/.297 in innings 4-9 this season.

• John Lannan and Kyle Kendrick have combined for a 63.2% groundball rate. Those two are really doing their jobs.

• The Phillies have a .291 team OBP. Their OBP in 2007 was .354. It dropped to .334 by 2009 and has decreased every year since.

• In the playoff years of 2007-11, the Phillies were 5th in baseball in walks. Last year they were 24th. This year they're 25th.

• The Phils have scored in 7 of their last 53 innings.

• Homer Bailey last night became the 5th pitcher in major-league history to pitch a scoreless game with two or fewer hits and at least 10 Ks in under 90 pitches. The last guy to do it was David Cone in his 1999 perfect game. Jim Bunning also did it in his 1964 perfect game.

*People actually think this team is good?

The Braves are kind of frightening. I knew they were gonna be good, but this is just something else. They could play below .500 for the rest of the season and still make a wildcard spot just of this blitzkrieg start.

Aumont stinks.

The Phillies stink.

I'm going to bitch this entire season because it's Amaro's fault.

I'm okay with the Halladay contract. He gave 2 amazing seasons, one mediocre, and this year who knows.

Howard's contract is an albatross and he should be fired for signing him to it.

Lee's contract is okay.

Hamels will likely be okay.

That's a lot of big money contracts though. Can't waste all your funds on just a handful of players when your farm system isn't churning out MLB caliber players on the cheap.

Only 14 games, don't jump off the bridge yet!

I wanted to post something positive about the game but besides a handful of pitchers, I have nothing

I feel like Amaro is a good GM at getting front line talent (none of his big deals except for Howard turned out poorly), but he does not know how to manage a farm system to save his life. If he got fired, I think he could be a good GM for a team like the Pirates or Royals who are just a few stars away from being a serious contender. However, his skill set does not match what the Phillies need right now, and I think it may be time to let him go.

Offense? Hahahahaha.

Pitching? Hahahahaha.

Even the Astros are scoring runs.

I wish I would have put money on this team finishing under .500, because I'm sure they will.

We're going to get games like this from our fifth starter. The problem is that we need our fifth starter to be an ace in order to stay around .500.

Don't worry, Charlie's a former hitting coach. We have got it all covered with Joyner, Henderson, and ole' Chuck...

Give me Ruf and his shitty fielding in the OF. Hell, platoon him at first too vs. lefties. At least we might score a run or two...

So many changes need to be made on this team. The window closed last season, but Amaro tried to pry it back open. Not happening. They're a bad offense that doesn't get on base. Low batting average, barely ever walk. C'mon!

Beer-a-Thon said...

What happens first this season- Phillies get on positive side of .500, Manuel is fired, Amaro trades for outfielder, or Cliff Lee is traded?

Beer-a-Thon said...

Phillies stink.

Phillies suck.

Phillies are done.

Chase Trillo said...

I hate that no one outside of Utley seems to give a shit...

Ben said...

The question: If he keeps producing, does Utley get traded at the deadline? He is a free agent this fall. If he does I will cry, knees be dammed.

Beer-a-Thon said...

I want Utley and Phillie for life.

I'd love for him to start a fight with whole team of pansies.

Appreciating the persistence you put into your blog

the same unwanted rehashed information. Fantastic read! I've saved your site and I'm adding

Utley is the one who should be a Phillie for life, but with Amaro, he will probably be the first one shipped out (I too will not be happy should it happen).

Phils should eat 1/2 to 3/4 of Hoard's contract and move him to whoever for whatever and play Ruf at first.

Brown and Lannan may be out for a few days to a DL stint :/

Won't miss Lannan...

I've been surfing online greater than three hours today, but I by no means discovered any fascinating article like yours. It is beautiful price enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made good content material as you probably did, the web will be a lot more helpful than ever before.
