Phillies Spring Training Wrap-Up

It's time to lay the 2013 Spring Training down to sleep for eternity.  The Phillies open the season tomorrow night in Atlanta and all the spring stats are gone like Cadbury Creme Eggs from the store shelves post Easter. Lets take one last look back on this past February/March...

*Domonic Brown lead all players with 24 runs scored and 32 hits this spring.

*Ben Revere stole 10 bases (2nd most).

*Michael Young (16), Ryan Howard (16), Chase Utley (17) & Domonic Brown (17) all ranked in the top 12 for RBI.

*Freddy Galvis tied for the team lead in extra base hits (12) and lead the team in strikeouts (22).

*Cole Hamels (0.95 ERA/0.79 WHIP) and Mike Adams (1.00 ERA/0.56 WHIP) dazzled on the mound.

*Raul Valdes allowed 5 homeruns in 17.1 IP.  Uh-oh!

*Zach Miner uncorked 3 wild pitches and allowed 5 stolen bases in 15.1 innings of work with a 9.39 ERA and 2.02 WHIP.  Cut him!

*Rule 5'er, Ender Inciarte, has made the Opening Day roster as the Phillies 5th outfielder.

Cole Hamels- 70's Porn Star?

Behold Hollywood Hamels handling of that whopping wiener while modeling a magnificent mustache. 70's porn star? I think so.

Like how I laid down that alliteration above?  Word.

Bad, Badder, Baddest- Phillies Pitching

The score is 13-0, half way through the Phillies/Blue Jays Grapefruit League clash, in favor of the bad guys.  That puts the Phillies staff ERA at 5.79 (2nd worst in all of baseball).  This isn't only the Phils minor league scrubs getting battered about.  Nope, the big boys are suffering through the same fate.

Today's victim- John Lannan, with 4 innings pitched, 14 hits allowed, and 12 earned runs surrendered.

He's merely the 5th starter in the rotation.  #3- Roy Halladay couldn't get a bunch of minor leaguers out on Saturday and has looked awful of late.  Injury, stamina, and velocity concerns are not vanishing, but getting worse.  #2- Cliff Lee is rocking a 5.94 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.  #4- Kyle Kendrick has a 5.14 ERA, and doesn't really inspire a lot of confidence to begin with.  The only one doing well is our #1- Cole Hamels.

Oh, but wait, lest not forget thy bullpen.  ERAs: Papelbon- 11.37, Stutes- 8.10, Durbin- 6.10, Horst- 5.54, Bastardo- 4.70, Valdes- 4.40.  Mike Adams and Phillippe Aumont have been the only two to impress this spring from the group.

Spring training stats don't count once Opening Day is here, but for now, they are frightening me.

Bye-Bye RoLo. Betancourt Next?

*Rodrigo Lopez was unceremoniously released yesterday.  In recent years, both his major and minor league numbers have been poor, so sending him along his unmerry way was the right move. The Phillies don't need his type of depth in Triple-A.  Tyler Cloyd, Jonathan Pettibone, Adam Morgan, and Ethan Martin all serve the same purpose as RoLo would have this season, except with much greater upside.

*Judgement day awaits Yuniesky Betancourt.  He has an opt-out clause in his contract for March 24th, should the Phils not add him to the 25-man roster.  He's done everything he could to earn a spot, currently batting .435/.940 with reported improved defensive instincts.  He's in competition with Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen for 1 of the 2 utility infielder openings.  Manuel pops a woody over Galvis and Frandsen was great with the Phils last year, so Betancourt might be the odd man out.

*After belting a walk-off homerun yesterday against the Braves, Darin Ruf was told to report to minor league camp.  Meaning, Rule 5 pick, Ender Incarte, is likely the team's 5th outfielder until Delmon Young returns.  Honestly, I hate Amaro's love of his Rule 5 draftees.  David Herndon wasn't terrible, but lest not forget the plague of Michael Martinez.  Incarte has never played about Single-A and after starting the spring off well and has gone into a complete tailspin (2 for his last 15 with no walks, no stolen bases, and a caught stealing).  What do they see in him?

*6 spots remain open in the WSBGMs Phantasy League 7.2, which is point based.  Click on the above Yahoo! image and use the information below to try your luck against a bunch of other wannabe GMs.

Spring Training MVP- Domonic Brown

Spring Training has officially moved into the tedious stage, with most players, managers, and fans ready to start the season.  Domonic Brown is one of those players most anxious, because he's got his stroke perfected and doesn't want to waste his base knocks on meaningless March games.  A case can be made for him being the 2013 Spring Training MVP.

MLB Ranks:
AVG - .397 (16th)
OBP - .465 (14th)
SLG - .714 (10th)
OPS - 1.179 (9th)
H - 25 (1st)
R - 21 (1st)
HR - 6 (tied for 1st)
RBI - 12 (tied for 8th)

He's won the Opening Day nod in right field, and will play there until Delmon Young sadly returns.  Hopefully Dom can begin to fulfill all the hope and hype that was thrust upon him in his younger years.  Then  he could be a mainstay in the Phillies outfield for years to come.

Roster Moves and Whatnot

*The Phillies gave away minor league pitcher, Michael Cisco.  Not released, not waived, not traded, but literally given to the Angels. No compensation.  Very altruistic of them.  The 25 year old has been amazing since converting to relief.  Over the past two seasons in Double and Triple-A he has gone 13-3, in 69 appearances, pitching 137.1 innings, with 109 strikeouts, a 1.70 ERA, and a 1.17 WHIP.  Now watch him to go on and become the next great setup man while the Phillies struggle trying to find consistency in their bullpen.

*Yuniesky Betancourt is making himself appear to have value.  If he doesn't make the Phillies roster, he very well might make another team's.  For example, the Cardinals, lacking surefire shortstop are a possible destination.  Sure, how about Betancourt straight up for Shelby Miller?  Seems fair.

*Justin De Fratus and Jake Diekman won't be on the Opening Day roster.  They've been optioned to Triple-A, meaning Michael Stutes, Jeremy Horst, Raul Valdes, and Phillippe Aumont are competing for the final 3 spots in the bullpen.

*All this talk about Rule 5 pick Ender Inciarte making the team needs to stop.  He's never played above Single-A and aside from defense and some speed, he doesn't have much upside.  If Ruf isn't staying with the Phils, my vote goes for Jermaine Mitchell.  He has speed, defense, and some pop.  Plus, he's shown he can do it at Triple-A, which is a far cry from the low minors.

*Roy Halladay was looking to shut up the naysayers, but instead was removed after one inning because of illness.  I am worried about him.  His demeanor/mound presence has been shaken and his velocity is in the mid-80's.  Those aren't good things.

Spring Training Tidbits

*In Kissimmee, facing the Astros, Charlie Manuel was run over by a tricycle during a mid-inning race. He had this to say about the harrowing experience- "That three-wheeler got me. I saw him, man. I thought, 'He better get over.' He got me. He ran over me with a three-wheeler. Dubee was supposed to stop him there, isn't he? He's supposed to save me. He let me get run over. He said, 'Go ahead, hit him.' He ran over my toes, too, man."

*Jimmy Rollins is batting .357 in the World Baseball Classic (5-14 with 1 DBL and 1 SB).  Team USA takes on Team Puerto Rico in Round 2 tonight.

*Domonic Brown leads all players in runs scored this spring with 15.  He's also tied for 2nd in hits with 16, tied for 9th in walks with 6, 12th in batting average at .432, and 9th in OPS at 1.252.  Not too shabby.

*Aside from Cole Hamels implosion against Team Dominican Republic, which doesn't count against Spring Training stats, he's be outstanding with a 0.90 ERA and 0.70 WHIP.

*Rich Dubee said the bullpen competition begins today.  Papelbon, Bastardo, Adams, and Durbin are the only guarantees.  Stutes, De Fratus, Horst, Diekman, Aumont, and Valdes are all vying for the final 3 spots.

Phillies Pitchers Have Been Dreadful

Spring Training stats don't mean diddly squat when Opening Day finally arrives, but for right now, they're all we have to look and what we're looking at is dreadful.

Through 15 Grapefruit League games the Phillies pitchers have hurled 132 innings.  In those innings, the opposition has collected 162 hits, 46 walks, 107 run, and 93 earned runs.  Do some fancy work with a calculator and you get a 6.34 ERA and 1.58 WHIP.

Obviously the defense has been a burden thus far, with 14 unearned runs scored.  Also, being spring training there are pitchers getting time that won't be on the Opening Day roster.  However, there are plenty of guys that will be and overall, they're doing abysmally.

*Kyle Kendrick- 9.00/1.75
*Michael Stutes- 6.75/1.75
*Raul Valdes- 7.36/1.23
*Jonathan Papelbon- 27.00/3.75
*Jeremy Horst- 14.40/2.60
*Chad Durbin- 9.00/2.00
*Justin De Fratus- 9.00/2.00
*BJ Rosenberg- 24.30/4.50
*JC Ramirez- 10.12/1.88
*Zach Miner- 12.71/2.12
*Tyler Cloyd- 13.50/2.25
*Kyle Simon- 6.00/1.67

I'm not saying this means the death of the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies.  However, it is something to monitor as we get closer to Opening Day.

WSBGMs Phantasy Baseball League 7

The name of this site is We Should Be GMs, so it's only fitting that we all want to run our own baseball team. Well, since we're not Ruben Amaro Jr. or Brian Cashman, we'll just have to settle for GMing a fantasy baseball team. That's right, it's time for WSBGMs Phantasy Baseball League 7!

Pointless Spring Training Update #3

*The World Baseball Classic officially begins tonight (9 PM on MLB Network) for Team USA, as they face Team Mexico.  Jimmy Rollins will be starting at SS.  Wonder if manager Joe Torre will bat him leadoff.

*Domonic Brown remains a man on a mission, and that mission is to finally live up to all the hype of his elite prospect tag.  He's currently batting .400/1.280 with 13 R, 5 XBH, and 6 BB.

*The Phillies pitching staff surrendered 3 homeruns to Twins prospect Aaron Hicks yesterday.  He only had 13 homeruns last season in 563 at bats.

*Ryan Howard has played in every Grapefruit League game so far, but finally gets a day off today.  Charlie Manuel said he wants to get Howard into shape, hence the heavy workload in meaningless games.

*Catching prospect Tommy Joseph is making a good impression with the bat- .462/1.308 in 6 games.

*Darin Ruf is really struggling this spring at the plate and in the field, likely playing himself into a full-time Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

*The bullpen has been terrible thus far.  Justin De Fratus, Chad Durbin, Michael Stutes, Jeremy Horst, BJ Rosenberg, Zach Miner, JC Ramirez, and Jonathan Papelbon all have ERAs over 9.  The only competition going on there is who can allow the most runs.

*Roy Halladay's fastball was only hitting 86-88 mph during his latest outing.

Team Stats & Ranks
*Record - 6-6-1

*AVG - .273 (20th)

*OPS - .787 (17th)

*R - 77 (9th)

*HR - 15 (tied 10th)

*SB - 8 (tied 16th)

*ERA - 6.26 (29th)

*WHIP - 1.56 (23rd)

*FLD% - .965 (26th)

Cliche Alert- "It's Only Spring Training"

A day after the Phillies pitching staff 1-hit the Pirates for a shutout win, Cole Hamels "got behind the 8-ball" and allowed 8 earned runs on 12 hits over 2.2 innings.  While facing the Dominican Republic WBC squad is more of a challenge than the lowly Buccos, it remains disheartening nonetheless.  After Hamels departed, Ethan Martin came in and gave up 3 more runs.  Current score is 11-1 heading into the bottom of the 5th.  Don't worry though, "it's only spring training".  It's not like Cole Hamels is the staff ace or anything.  He was probably just "working on his fastball" and still "felt good" despite the results.  Freakin' cliches!

Pointless Spring Training Update #2

*Jonathan Papelbon is having a terrible spring- 1.2 IP, 8 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 43.20 ERA, 6.00 WHIP.

*Ryan Howard is locked in, hitting .444/1.254, with 3 doubles, a homerun, 5 RBI, and only 4 K in 18 AB.

*Dom Brown is making a strong bid for one of the corner outfield spots, hitting .385/1.523, with 2 homeruns, and 6 walks.

*The catching situation seems rather bleak.  Outside of Carlos Ruiz, who is suspended for the first 25 games of the season, the catchers are batting a collective .105 (2-19).  They've also not gunned down a base thief yet, as teams are a perfect 9-9 in stolen base attempts.

*Darin Ruf has collected some hits since the last update, 3 to be exact.  However, his defense has been atrocious.

*Jump for joy that Mike Adams made an injury-free appearance.  People were worried he'd end up out for the season like Chris Carpenter, who also had thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.

*Both Cole Hamels and RoLo (aka- Rodrigo Lopez) have yet to allow a run through 5 innings apiece.

*Competition for the final two bullpen spots is far from riveting, as all of Raul Valdes, Michael Stutes, Justin De Fratus, and BJ Rosenberg have an ERA of 9.00 or higher.

Team Stats

*Record- 3-3-1

*Offense- .260/.749 with 38 runs scored.  Meh.

*Pitching- 5.86 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 11 HR allowed.  Overall, they have been one of the worst staffs thus far.

*The Phillies have committed 12 errors in 7 games.  Not good.
