Phillies get:

Vance Worley

I like it.

Until he starts hitting like M&M.

not quite that bad, but i get your point.

alejando ham said...

two young arms for an average cf.... plus this puts KK in the rotation

Anonymous said...

Please do not complain about KK being in the rotation. It's old. He is a damn good commodity as a fifth starter, way better than Blanton ever was.

chase trillo said...

sucks we missed out on uehara. amaro should have been all over that!

GM-Carson said...

Kk in the rotation is fine by me.

The price they paid for Revere is crazy. Almost every analyst thinks Amarillo was fleeced.

They need some big bats at 3rd and RF now because this lineup is weak.

Aaron said...

One other note on Revere....
The guy only played in 124 games last year and stole 40 bases!
Give the guy another 30 games played and he could steal 50!

Aaron said...

Carson...you seem to really hate this trade...
Who did you want to be in center field for us?
Did you really want to pay 40 mil for Vic or Pagan??

I understand they gave up a lot but the guy we are getting is very young, very cheap, very fast and a very good defender who nearly hit 300 last year?
I know you didn't want Bourne......So what they traded away aside......Do you not like Revere? And why?

alejando ham said...

What will are they going to give up for Young?? The Rangers have to be asking for a lot after what the twins just got......

chase trillo said...

rumor has it lindbomb would be headed to texas. worth it for that alone! look forward to young coming here. hope he accepts the deal.

It was a steep price for Revere, no question. Amaro is banking on the idea that he'll be able to get a big bat for one of the OF corner spots. We'll see.

I like Revere, but the price was too high.

chase trillo said...

intrigued by the young possibility. thrilled at purging lindbomb from the roster!

GM-Carson said...

Revere literally has no power. He doesn't even hit for double. 67% of his balls in play are on the ground. He's basically a singles hitter and that scares me.

I also think that was a huge price to land him. Look at what Washington gave up to get the better player in Span...they gave up far less!!!!

The lineup is putrid right now. I don't think Howard is much of anything. I foresee him being a .230ish hitter possibly the rest of his career. Utley...who the hell knows? J-Roll, barely reaches base 30% of the f'n time!

This lineup sucks!!!!! Oh, and the starting rotation just got weaker.

This is only a good trade if Nick Swisher or Josh Hamilton are signed.

GM-Carson said...

A Twins blogger offered his scouting report on Revere- "He takes some weird routes, definitely, but I don't think he's totally clueless out there. And his speed is truly elite. Might be the fastest guy in the majors, with lots of quickness and athleticism, and good long speed too. He has an incredible ability to make contact and I think sometimes that makes it appear as though he doesn't have much patience. He rarely walks, but that's in part because pitchers aren't afraid to throw him strikes and in part because whenever he swings he's putting the ball in play. So basically any swing ends the at-bat, ruling out a walk. He's willing to take some pitches, though. Exceptional base-stealer, both in terms of volume and success rate. Could easily steal 50-60 bases a season at a good clip. Not a very good bunter despite the Twins repeatedly asking him to work on that. And almost literally zero power. Like, struggles to hit fly balls to the warning track and will probably never hit an over-the-fence homer."

GM-Carson said...

Holes: 3rd base, RF, 8th inning, 5th starter.

I like Cloyd, but I'm warry of giving him the 5th spot in the rotation.

Horst, Bastardo, and Aumont looked good at times last year, but are any of them ready to be an elite setup man?

Frandsen/Galvis at 3rd base = very little offense.

Ruf, Brown, and Mayberry are currently the outfielders outside of Revere.

Things are still ugly.

Bob D said...

The last sounds like Bourn .... But cheaper. Cost the Phils a Sp and prospect but not seventy five million. That leaves about 30million to sign a few players. Maybe Greinke if i was Gm.
Looks like a leadoff hitter or the number eight hitter

Ben said...

Knowing how Amaro loves to sign aces, I would not be surprised at all to see Grenke with a "P" on his cap come spring training. However, right now the 3B situation is far more important.

GM-Carson said...

Greinke will NOT be a Phillie. Ain't happening.

Anonymous said...

If Amaro signs Greinke, he cements his status as a dope.

Offense should be the first priority. We need a power bat. (But please not Hamilton.)

SirAlden said...

I woke up liking this trade.

Yes we need RF, 3B, and 8th inning relief.

So here is my bottom line, does this increase the chances of us getting those things?

If instead we sign, (Bourne whose production for the next four years could be in the same range as Revere) for 40 Million for 4 years, does that increase the chances of us getting those things?

The answer is NO. So YES to this trade for me. Good gamble.

Rando said...

Vanimal we hardly knew ya. This trade stinks very way u look at it. I despair.

chase trillo said...

no brandon mccrathy for the phils. he just signed a deal with arizona.

Anonymous said...

I am always amazed at the trades people want for this team. Are you looking forward to $50 3rd level seats at CBP? I'm not, and I want a good team to enjoy, but let us be reasonable! Worley had elbow trouble, and MAY come back strong. Or maybe not... Trevor May showed gross mediocrity last year. For those 2 bodies, we got a center fielder with great range and speed, who hit over 300 away from Target Field. And he is 24. If we get Young, great. If not, look for a Greg Dobbs like utility player to platoon at 3rd with Frandsen. RAJ isn't done, but I am not in love with spending 23 mill a year for Hamilton.

Anonymous said...

I agree. Terrible deal.

chase trillo said...

no ludwick for the phils. he is going back to cincy.

Beer-a-Thon said...

Current lineup:

1. Revere/CF
2. J-Roll/SS
3. Utley/2B
4. Howard/1B
5. Chooch/C *suspended 25 G
6. Mayberry/RF
7. Brown/Ruf/LF
8. Frandsen/Galvis/3B

That is a fucking terrible.

Anonymous said...

Revere will hit 2nd, behind Jimmy.

Beer-a-Thon said...

Why?

Anonymous said...

Nothing new with the proposed Young deal today. Good sign? Bad sign? How long does it take a guy to decide? lol

GM-Carson said...

I wish this was Michael Young of 5 seasons ago.

Bob D said...

Young is one year removed from an All Star season. I can see Ruben going into spring or early season giving Brown and Ruf a shot with Nix and Mayberry as fall back options and trade if need be. I could see a bargain bin signing next month as a way to push them to produce. If Ruf pans out he will be the right handed power bat to complement Ruiz. Young can also play corner Of

Anonymous said...

Does everyone remember signing Chad Qualls last January because Rube overpaid for Papelbohn early on?

Would everyone be feeling better if Upton or Bourn were in town now with their outrageous contracts?

The Phigtens cetainly have not stole any headlines but Revere and/or Young present great value and flexibility to add more talent (OF, bullpen...). Lets see what happens down the road a little.

Chase Trillo said...

So http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/ has an article titled "The Phils Seeking Pitching" and who is in a picture under the article? John Lannan. I think I will repeatedly barf if the Phils sign him...

Aaron said...

Indications are this morning that Young is going to wave hit no trade clause.

I like what Rube has done so far. Young hit .277 last year. It was his worst average ever. Here is a list of phillies who hit better than .277 last year over a full season....
Juan Pierre
Chooch on drugs

pretty short list. .277 looks pretty damn good to me.

Same goes for Revere at .294

They will have only spent about 6.5 mil on those two so plenty of money to fill other needs.

I'd like to see the Phils sign Swisher, Right handed power, gets on base a ton and can also play first base. Let Ruf and Brown fight it out for playing time.

I'd like to see the Phils take a shot on Jurgens as a 5th starter.

A lineup of

Revere
Rollins
Utley
Swisher
Howard
Ruf/Brown
Ruiz
Young
That looks pretty damn good to me. Speed with Revere and Rollins, Power with Swisher, Howard and Ruf. Michael Young as your 8 hole hitter would be pretty freakin good.

My fear is the Phils will put too much stock in Brown and go cheap for someone like Scott Hairston.

Also seeing the 8th inning reliever possibilities disappear is troubling. WE REALLY NEED A SOLID 8TH INNING GUY!

GM-Carson said...

Maybe Amarillo is a genius and these moves all work, but for the being I am very skeptical.

Ben said...

I agree with Aaron on most things. I am not all that worried about the 'pen as they started getting better at then end of last year as their major league confidence went up. As to the new starter hole, I would love for Amaro to sign Anibal Sanchez. Get Swisher, Sanchez, and trade for Young, and I think we have a contending team.

Anonymous said...

I like the moves so far this off-season, and I think it's time we stop trying to be the Yanks/Sox of the NL. The Phils need to get back to the grittiness that defined them from 06-09. There seems to be an overarching sense of entitlement with the franchise now that I'm not too fond of.

GM-Carson said...

Glad LindBOMB is gone.

Young and Revere for $6.5M

What's next Rube?

Chase Trillo said...

Nice job on Michael Young. Now lets bring two of his ex-teammates along (Hamilton & Adams), take a flier on Jurrjens, and call it an off-season!

I can live with Swisher too if they don't go the Hamilton route.

And please, stay away from Lannan!!

Aaron said...

Glad to see Lindbombs go. Bonilla may turn into a very go reliever in a year or so.

Good trade. We just need Young to be good for 1 year while Ashe develops or Franco.

5th starter
Right handed power bat outfielder
Set up man
and lets play ball.

Aaron said...

In 2008 Young hit .284
In 2009 young hit .322
In 2010 young hit .284
In 2011 young hit .338
In 2012 young hit .277

why is it so hard to imagine he could hit .300 this year.

Is he a good fielder.....No. Can he still hit better than most guys on our team...yes.

I'm kind of pissed off that so many people are so down on Rube's moves this year. The problem with Rube in the past has been all the giant contracts he's been handing out to people who don't deserve it. Well this year is doing the opposite and every body's getting on him. I don't get it.
Do you want Ben Revere for half a million dollars or Vic or Pagan for 40 million. Or 75 -80 million for Bourne or Upton and his .240 BA?
Do you really prefer Galvis/Frandsen as your everyday 3rd baseman or Young.....honestly.
The Phillies are better at two positions and haven't spent any real money.
Do I like Worley...yes......but do you really think we can find someone to pitch just as well or better than him??

Anonymous said...

@Aaron: Everything you said=right on.

Beer-a-Thon said...

Revere is young, but his ceiling isn't very high. He will never have power, not even doubles power. He doesn't draw walks, but he does make tons of contact and is super fast. So, if he can hit enough singles and steal enough bases then I'll be fine with him.

Young is not young. He is a HORRIBLE fielder, which scares me. His batting average of .277 was empty. His OPS was well below .700, and that ain't even that good. If he could work some magic and pump out a near .300 average again, then this is a good deal.

Lindblom is nothing special. Worley is decent, will miss him. Trevor May has closer stuff and so does Lisalberto Bonilla.

But the offseason is far from over, so can't even grade Amaro yet. Wait and watch...

Anonymous said...

Next on my wish list...

Swisher
JP Howell
Marcum

And Amaro, if you even think of calling John Lannan... please just give me a million dollars and I'll kick you in the balls... that will be much cheaper.

Corey said...

if they sign nick swisher, i'm done being a phillies fan.

GM-Carson said...

Where the hell does the offense come from with this current group? It's not like they can rely on Utley and who the hell knows what Howard can do anymore.

They need a corner outfielder with pop and that's either Hamilton or Swisher.
