More Stupid Contracts...

Ty Wigginton/Cardinals - 2 YR/$5M - sucks defensively at every position he plays, doesn't really hit all that much anymore (.235/.688 last season), and was worth -1.7 WAR in 2013 (that's negative!!!).  They just traded away Skip Schumaker, who is more versatile, a better fielder, runner, and hitter and is making less money.  Um, what?

Jack Hannahan/Reds - 2 YR/$4M - a career .234/.671 hitter that is set to turn 33 years old that can only play 3rd base.  At least he plays quality defense, unlike Wiggy.

Kevin Correia/Twins - 2 YR/$10M - apparently going 24-22 over 325 IP with a 4.49 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP while striking out only 4.6 batter per 9 innings in the past 2 seasons with the Pirates is worth a lot.

Ichiro Suzuki/Yankees - 2 YR/$13M - no power, extremely low OBP, has been roaming the Earth since Noah saved him on his ark.  Ruin Tomorrow Jr. offered him 2 YR/$15M, sothank goodness he opted for NY instead.

*Josh Hamilton's 5 YR/$125M pact looks like a bargain considering Ryan Howard has the same contract and they were the same age when the contract began.  Last three seasons Hamilton has posted a combined 15.3 WAR to Howard's 0.8.  It is clear that Hamilton is the superior player.  He plays better defense, runs the bases better, hits for just as much power and knocks in as many runs.  If they're not equals, then why equal contracts? Once again, I absolutely LOATHE Ryan Howard's contract.

DUDE....The Wiggy and Sanchez contracts are F'ing Retarted!!!

How the hell is Sanchez worth 75 million dollars.
I too was baffled by the trade or shumaker and signing of wiggy......for TWO YEARS????

The one good thing I can say about Rube is that so far he has not signed one of these terrible contracts.

But if the Ichiro rumor is true.........Good lord.

Anibal Sanchez 5 YR/$80M to a sub .500 pitcher.

How abou Joe Blanton. An innings eater means a guy that will give up enough runs not to get pulled, but too many to be a reliable winner. Good enough for a 4-5 starter, but you can't count on him in key games.

Joe- I agree. I touched on his contract in a previous post though, so therefore didn't include it in this one.

Mini Mart should be in line for three year $9million contract next year

GO GET TRUMBO FROM THE ANGELS!!!

I'd give up anyone but Joseph, Morgan, Biddle, or Ashe for Trumbo. He's exactly what we need. Cheap, young Right handed hitter with power. And with the Hamilton signing should be available. Won't cost us our number 1 draft pick like swisher would. Would make for a very good young outfield with Ruf/Brown battling it out in left Trumbo in right and Revere in Center.

Phils just claimed some crap minor league pitcher off waivers from the Mariners. Playoffs here we come.

Oh, and yes Trumbo would be nice.

Hamilton's contract is better than Howard's, but it is still asinine and abysmal. If you're going to give a guy more the 20 million a year, he should show you that he's going to be able to play every game at the very least. Hamilton's injury history is what makes that contract bad, not his on-field performance.

Also, how the hell did Wigginton get a contract at all, let alone for two years? Really Cardinals? I thought they were smarter than that.

I thought the Cards were smarter too?

I honestly though Wiggy would get nothing better than a minor league contract.

Yeah I remember we said he would likely get a Minor League contract (Wiggington)

I'd steer clear of Swisher because it would cost alot and even more so you lose the 1st round pick. I would lose 1st round pick for Grienke or Hamilton, but not for the rest. Swisher would be nice, but It would be better to get a Trumbo or simular player.

Still need a SP, hopefully one that wont break the bank, low risk type.

I can also see the Phils starting out spring or the season before adding another bat. I see potential in Ruf who could surprise for Rookie of Year.

Optimism growing expontentially for Darin Ruf. Not just among fans, but basebally talking heads and excecutives alike. He really could end up be the ROY in 2013.

Sometimes a GM has to overpay a player in order to sign the player. Also, when one player similar in value to another gets a type of contract, that similar player will likely want the same type of contract. A GM probably can't wait for a player to lower his demands in case another team goes for him.

Mike Adams seems to be the new set-up man.

MIke Adams, 3 years 18 million according to Phillies.com.
NIce!! Love it.

Very happy with Adams! Still need a power hitting middle of the line-up bat, plus a 5th starter type. Sign Swisher and gamble on Jurrjens and call it an off-season. Correct that, a very nice off-season!
