How is the hunt for the playoffs in the National League shaping up? Well, the Nationals are going to win the East, the Reds got it in the Central, and San Fran has the West. At 20 games above .500 (83-63), the Atlanta Braves have essentially assured themselves one of the NL Wild Cards. The second Wild Card, well that's a cluster-you-know-what. The Dodgers and St. Louis are currently tied, with Pittsburgh 2 games back, Milwaukee 2.5, Philadelphia 3.
The Phillies certainly aren't doing themselves any favors by losing 2 out of 3 so far to the worst team in the Majors in possibly the last 20 years. Seriously, the Astros are that bad. I understand that baseball is unpredictable and shit happens, but to get skunked last night with the arms Houston ran out to the mound is inexcusable. They need to salvage the series with a win this afternoon and then regroup for the remainder of the 2012 schedule. They're not out of it, but this weekend has not put them in it either. This is the equivalent to purgatory, smack dab between heaven and hell.
Today's matchup:
Roy Halladay toes the slab in search of his 199th career victory. Jordan Lyles goes for the 'stros, he of only 6 MLB wins and a career 5.34 ERA. In other words, if the Phillies don't win this game, then they don't deserve a shot at October baseball.

Best case scenario is that the Phils keep pace and stay 3 games back, since the LA and St. Louis are playing each other.
Runners on 1st and 2nd, count 3-0 on Howard and Manuel gives him the green light although he's sucked recently. GIDP. Manuel f'n idiot!
F'n Howard!!!! You big Fing idiot take a damn pitch!!!!!!!!!
Phillies don't deserve the playoffs. Playing/managing this poorly against the Astros should automatically disqualify them.
What happened to Halladay this year and will he regain his form next year?
Halladay is getting old and has logged many innings on his arm. His "stuff" is in decline. I do not think we'll see the 2010-2011 version of him again for an entire season.
Aumont all over the place right now. His shellacking the other night effed him up mentally. Manuel is a f'n idiot!
Tell me why Manuel is coming back next season? Look at this bullshit going on in Houston. What the hell does he have to do to convince Amaro that he's not right for the job anymore.
Losing this bad to the Astros is the worst thing possible. All other 38 teams are laughing at them.
Did anyone have any doubt they were gonna lose today?
Doc is done.
Manual needs to lose his job.
Aumont is a head case.
The season ended today.
Sickening
Maddening
Complete bullshit
Season over... again.
Corporan (who?) with the Howard to win for the Stros
We are going to do it.
Needed some drama.
We need and will get -
A significant Centerfielder
A significant 8th inning Reliever
A Thirdbaseman
Too bad we can't add manager to that list...
Terrible weekend. Just terrible.
I didn't even know the Phillies played last night until the way into work this morning. That's how much I've soured on the remaining schedule due to the debacle in Houston this past weekend.
