Crazy Idea- Ryan Howard for John Lackey

Two mighty teams have tumbled from supremacy this season, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox.  Each team has been winning for the better part of the last decade, but has fallen upon hard times this season due to injuries and bad contracts.  How about helping each other out?

To Boston- Ryan Howard and his 4 years and $105M remaining on his contract.

To Philly- John Lackey and his 2 years and $30.5M remaining on his contract.

Ryan Howard is an overpaid miscast first baseman.  Sending him to the AL where he can primarily DH and occasionally play 1B might keep him healthier and possibly more productive.  This would also give the Red Sox a DH to replace David Ortiz, and rid them of Lackey's contract.

Lackey hasn't pitched since 2011, and ended that season with a ghastly 6.41 ERA and 1.62 WHIP.  He's missed this entire season recovering from Tommy John surgery.  He can't be counted on to be productive ever again.  He'll be 34 years old next season and has been a below average starting pitcher the two years prior to this one. Essentially the Phillies would be acquiring deadweight, but some salary relief.

Salary Relief in both 2013 and 2014 for the Phillies- $9.75M.  Overall salary relief- $74.5M.

Estimated Payroll for Phillies (minus Howard, plus Lackey) for 2013- $138M.
Includes: Lee, Halladay, Utley, Hamels, Papelbon, Rollins, Ruiz, KK, Nix, Lackey, Worley, Lindblom, Kratz, Aumont, Ruf, Frandsen, Bastardo, Horst, Mayberry, Galvis, and Brown.

That leaves roughly $40M to spend until the luxury tax threshold.

I propose signing Angel Pagan (3 YR/$24-$27M) for CF, Eric Chavez (1 YR/$3M) or Jeff Keppinger (2 YR/$8M) for 3B, Torii Hunter (2 YR/$20-$24M) for RF, and a setup man.

Lineup:
1. Angel Pagan/CF
2. Chase Utley/2B
3. Torii Hunter/RF
4. Carlos Ruiz/C
5. Jimmy Rollins/SS
6. Darin Ruf/1B
7. John Mayberry/Domonic Brown/LF (Platoon)
8. Kevin Frandsen/Eric Chavez/3B (Platoon)

Bench:
1. Erik Kratz/C
2. Laynce Nix/OF/1B
3. Freddy Galvis/UTL

Rotation:
1. Cole Hamels
2. Cliff Lee
3. Roy Halladay
4. Kyle Kendrick
5. Vance Worley

Bullpen:
1. Jonathan Papelbon/Closer
2. John Lackey/Long Reliever
3. Antonio Bastardo
4. Jeremy Horst
5. Josh Lindblom
6. Phillippe Aumont
7. One of Michael Schwimer, Justin DeFratus, Michael Stutes, David Herndon, Jacob Diekman, and BJ Rosenberg.

*I obtained the contract information from Cot's Baseball Contracts.  I've seen all sorts of projected payroll figures, but most of them fall within a $5M range.

*Handing over full-time duty to Darin Ruf, he of only 2 MLB hits, is a bit crazy.

*Boston would likely never go for this deal and Amaro isn't crafty enough to devise it.  I was merely having some fun.

I would be all over this deal if the Sox didn't give away a $100 million first baseman. It would kill me to hand away Gonzalez to get Howard. However, I would still rather have Howard than Lackey. Not that I don't think Lackey can be good again. Once he's healthy, no reason he can't be what he was supposed to be. But, I think the Sox have better options at pitcher than first base. Let's do it.

Well, you play GM of the BoSox and I'll play GM of the Phils and we'll get it done.

It would be nice to find a way to land Ellsbury if they truly are cleaning house in Boston. How about Ellsbury and Lackey for Howard and Kendrick.

And I am no fan of Lackey, but would do the deal for Ellsbury and salary relief. I would not do it straight up at this point. I would have to look at other options before going down that road.

Getting Ellsbury in that deal would be sweet. Can't see it happening without the Phils sending millions to Boston to facilitate it.

OK, Howard, Kendrick, and 15 million to Boston for Ellsbury, Lackey, and the remaining Howard salary relief.

Silly.

Ryan Howard is the 2nd fastest to 300 Homeruns in MAJOR LEAUGUE HISTORY !.

He is an RBI machine. Without him in the lineup no one sees good pitches. Your Nuts GM Carson. Love you but your NUTS.

Yes he was hurt. So was Chase.
He is essential next year.

Actually, I can't believe I forgot, Lackey has three years left on his deal. Since he had Tommy John, there's a clause that activates one more year at league minimum. So, it's really 3-$30.5M. Much more affordable for the Phils.

Beer-a-Thon said...

What? That's crazy! I've never heard of such a clause.

Darin Ruf might just be the real deal. Late blooming minor leaguer?

Angel Pagan sucks.

Here's is next years opening day lineup. Like it or hate it this what i see happening.

Lineup
Rollins ss
BJ Upton cf
Utley 3b
Howard 1b
Ruiz c
Ruf lf
Brown rf
Galvis 2b

Bench
Kratz
Frandsen
Nix
Mayberry
Shierholtz

Starters
Hamels
Lee
Halladay
Kendrick
Worley

Bullpen
Paplebon
Mike Adams
Lindblom
Defratus
Aumont
Horst
Bastardo

I think Ruf is the real deal. I think Brown develops into a better than average player but not a superstar.
I think Aumont and Bastardo suck. I think KK reverts back to sucking and Petibone takes his spot. I think Cloyd sucks and has a horrible year in the minors next year. I think Utley sucks at 3rd base.
I think Glavis gets sent down after sucking for half the season they move Utley back to second and call up Ashe to play 3rd mid season.

I'd take Pagan over B.J. Upton. We don't need another J-Roll type batter. Now if we are talking Justin Upton...

GM-Carson said...

I prefer Pagan to Boss Man Jr. Upton too.

Freddy Galvis can't hit and won't hit.

Mike Adams has not been that good this season. He can't go back-to-back games either.

I agreee BJ Upton sucks. But that's who I think they will sign. I'd rather have Bourne but not for the money they would have to pay to get him.

Bj would fit in nice. No way trade Howard for slop. What a joke

You don't pay for yesterday's production. Sure, Howard did have a 160+ RC+ season, but his ability is declining rapidly. If amaro put his pride aside, he'd realize that unloading Howard now (whatever way possible) is his best move.
