TRADE - Pence to Giants

Giants get:
1) Hunter Pence - Pence is under team control for 1 more year and will likely make close to $14 million next season.

Phillies get:
1) Tommy Joseph - Joseph is a 21 year old catcher who hit 22 homers last season in A+ and is putting up respectable numbers in AA considering his age and position.

Quick evaluation - It became apparent through recent reports that the Phillies didn't want to pay Pence $14 million next season, but if this is the actual trade (still unconfirmed) I'm surprised Rube couldn't get somebody more ready for the majors since the team now goes into next year with a minor leaguer (Brown), a part-timer (Mayberry) and a mystery player starting in the outfield.

Update: Jon Heyman reports Nate Schierholtz plus another player will join Joseph in the deal. Schierholtz is unhappy in SF after losing playing time. He's nothing more than a fourth outfielder.

I hope to God the Giants are giving more than just that minor league catcher.

Think about the players Amaro gave up to get Pence. Hopefully there is at least 1 more prospect come way of SF.

Apparently this isn't a sealed deal yet as physicals need to be done and the Phils might be asking for a bit more.

To Raj: GET MINOR LEAGUE INFIELDERS YOU BIG DUMMY.

Hopefully the pitcher is one of the Giants stable of relievers.

Shierholtz is nothing special, but he's a nice bench piece.

Schierholtz is also not a free agent until 2015, so the Phils would get 2 years out of him which is nice.

If this deal gets done, our offence will be even worse next year than the teams Seattle has fielded the past couple years. RAJ better be planning to flip some of these guys for mahor league ready outfielders.

Ben- there is always free agency this offseason.

Look for Dom Brown to settle into a .270/.775 type outfielder (which is decent).

If the Phillies do decide to go over the cap, then yes, free agency can adress that. If not, well... ruh-roh.

Done deal. I think the Giants just robbed us blind, but at least I don't have to put up with Pence's poor baseball IQ anymore.

The Giants had a pretty weak farm system. There only real piece other than the guys the Phils got would be underachieving 1B/OF prospect Brandon Belt (Dom Brown anyone?). The Phils best shot at middle infield help is a Blanton deal with the O's for Schoop.

Like the Victorino deal. Hate the Pence deal! Don't mind that they traded him, just hate the return they got for him.
There a lot of good free agent outfielders available though. I would like to see them sign Bourne and Swisher in the offseason. Love to have Bourne hit lead off, I think swisher is a better player than Pence.

Bourne/Rollins/Utley/Howard/Chooch would be a potent five to lead off. However, two of Nix/Mayberry/Sherholtz/Brown and a league average 3B are going to be an epically shitty 6-8.

Would like to see Amaro flip some of these prospects to get Headley. Then go after two of the following 4 outfielders.....Bourne, Swisher, Melky, Delmon young.

This would be a great lineup.....
Bourne
Headley
Utley
Howard
Cabrera
Ruiz
Brown
Rollins

Rotation ;
Hamels
Halladay
Lee
Worley
Cloud/petibone

Bullpen
Pap
Lindbolm
Kendrick
And 2 or three free agent relievers.

Bourne just said he was looking for $100 mil. He's out.

Hindsight, i just feel like Rube gave up a lot when we were buyers and didn't take enough when we were/are sellers. does he have an "awesome trade" on his resume? Oswalt i guess?

GM-Carson said...

Nick Swisher is getting old and isn't worth what the price.

Michael Bourn would look great leading off for the Phils.

The Pence trade isn't great, but it's not horrible. Schierholtz might end up being useful and that catcher seems to be good all around.

Really? That's it?!

Pierre, Wiggy, and Blanton all still Phillies.

C'mon Rube, could have and should have done better.

Guess now we wait to see if they're dealt before the the Waiver-Wire Trade Deadline at the end of August.

GM-Carson said...

Chad Qualls is a Phucco. Yankees just sent him to Pittsburgh for 1B/3B Casey McGehee.

Pirates just screwed their shot at the playoffs with that deal. Ugh.

Ben said...

I don't think I'd be totally adverse to having Pierre back again for one more year for a couple million.

Aaron said...

Very diss appointed Blanton wasn't traded. Really wanted to see Cloyd get an audition.
Glad they didn't trade Lee.
Pence and Vic have been my two biggests dissapointments this year.
Looking forward to Dom Brown for a longer look.

Ben said...

Blanton is staying with us for they year. Pierre still might go on waivers.

GM-Carson said...

Juan Pierre at a "couple million" would be a mistake. Minor league deal again next year, I'd be fine with, anything more...nah.

chase trillo said...

no problem here with either trade (would have liked gary brown from sf but still can't really
complain).

i'd like to see wiggington and polanco moved sometime in august. wouldn't mind blanton too, just to see if we have anything in cloyd.

the phils seemed so relaxed tonight. lee is probably thrilled to have vic gone. one of their best games of the year.

Ben said...

They're no longer trying to make the playoffs, so with the pressure of they can just worry about regrouping for next year and staying healthy. Cole's decision to stay is also a big moral boost.

Aaron said...

That Amaro is a genius! Frandsen goes yard, He doesn't trade Lee, and he throws 7 scoreless, Dom Brown gets called up and is already batting 1000. The new center fielder Mayberry gets on base 3 times and the Phils win 8-0.
Seriously though my biggest fear now is that Mayberry or Scherholtz goes on a hot streak and the Phil's think either of them is a starter for next year.
