Valdes Gets Raw Deal

Raul Valdes was optioned to Triple-A.  Why?  Certainly not because of his performance, because he is one of the few stabilizing forces in the bullpen.  Nope, it's because of the ineffectiveness of Michael Schwimer and Chad Qualls.  See,  Schwimer and Qualls are right-handed and they each suck.  That leaves the only quality RHP in the bullpen as closer Jonathan Papelbon.  Valdes is a lefty, so he goes. Can't wait to see the crap Amaro calls up to replace Valdes.  Brian Sanches?  Phillippe Aumont?  There's nothing down on the farm screaming "give me a chance!"  Funny/sad thing is, Valdes held right-handed batters to a lower average than lefties (.130 vs. .200).  Not sure why fellow lefties Joe Savery and Jake Diekman stay over him, but I'm not GM, just a wannabe, so...

Valdes: 2-0, 11 G, 12.2 IP, 13 K, 2.13 ERA, 0.63 WHIP.
Joe Savery: 13 G, 17.1 IP, 9 K, 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP.
Jake Diekman: 1-0, 10 G, 8.2 IP, 15 K, 4.15 ERA, 1.38.

Other Stuff:
*All of you Freddy Galvis fans need to brace yourselves...Freddy Galvis will likely be in a brace for roughly 6 weeks due to a back fracture.  Oh, no!!!

*My boy Mike Fontenot is not wasting his chance.  He clubbed a homerun last night and is batting .394/.989 in 17 games.

*Are you ready for a 2 game winning streak?  Of course you are.  With Tommy Hunter on the mound for the O's, this is a good time to make it happen.  A 5.59 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, .301 AVG against.  On second thought, he might toss his first career shutout.

Rumor has it that BJ Rosenberg will get the call to fill Valdes spot in the bullpen. If this is the case, that's better than Aumont or Sanches and somewhat intriguing.

Everyone loves a good BJ!

The 2 people that SHOULD go are Qualls and Manuel.

I have liked what Amaro has done up until this season (Qualls, Thome, re-signing Rollins, no big bat at 3B, letting Utley do whatever Utley wants to do).

This team, coaching staff, and front office is in shambles. The only reason they aren't further behind in the standings is that they've played mostly losing teams up to this point. They (and the fans) are delusional if they think the Phillies have played well enough to "stay close until we get out guys back".

It will be interesting this year to see how RAJ performs as a selling and rebuilding GM as opposed to a buying and championship-caliber team GM. I think he will fail utterly.

guess i was wrong about thome at DH, at least for yesterday...

Corey - you likely bad mouthed him into hitting :D

Aumont would be a good pick for the pen - he may be too fresh off the DL but he has the best arm.

BJ has been sucessful but he lacks speed on pitches - in majors he may not fare well (hope Im wrong)

This is a good team -unfortunately injuries have decimated it. Now Polonco is out for a few days - he should just be put on DL and Overbeck given a shot.

Fontenot has been a great pickup for the team, Luna doing well too. Nix comes back I would like Mayberry replaced if he doesnt turn season around

Savery is still on team because they may need him at 1B with all these injuries

I forsee Cliff Lee in OF soon too

1st inning, men on 1st and 3rd, 1 out...no runs scored. Double play to end the inning. Stupid team.

thome with another homer. i'm going to take credit for this. without my criticism to motivate him, he likely would not have gotten that hit...

If this reverse psychology stuff works, should we root for Utley, Howard, and Halladay to get more hurt? Or would that Jinx it?

Phillies suck!

I wonder if Raul Valdes would have served up the game on a silver platter like Rosenberg did.

The Phillies are idiots. I'm not saying Valdes is a savior, but he was pitching great. Don't fuck with success, especially when there isn't much of that going on this season for you.

Couldn't agree more about Valdes. WTF were they thinking? Then again, how often have we found ourselves saying that this year? Just about every game, far as I can tell...
