Hot Corner Howard & Other Stuff

Hot Corner Howard:
Earlier this season the catchers littered The Howard 2012 standings, but now the hot corner has caught fire.  The 4 players currently atop the Howard leaderboard are all 3rd basemen.  Don't look for Longoria to boost that total any higher, as he's on the DL.  Do keep an eye on rookie Will Middlebrooks who has committed 2 Howards in his first 4 games of his career.  Also, Pedro Alvarez's power seems to be returning and his fielding is as horrific as ever, so more Howards are likely to come for him too.

Hamels Out:
Looks like Cole Hamels will be the only one facing a consequence for the exchange of fastballs to the body and war of words between him and the Nationals.  Cole gets a 5 games suspension, while Gnats pitcher Jordan Zimmermann gets nada for his retaliation.  Nor does GM Frank Rizzo for calling Hamels "gutless", "fake tough", "chicken shit", and other pleasantries.

Last Place:
The Phillies are in last place in the NL East, 5 back of Washington.  Oh, that's encouraging.

Bad Bullpen:
With Papelbon's 9th inning meltdown last night, the Phils bullpen continues to blow games.  That's something like the 6th game this season lost in the 9th inning or later.  Oh, that's encouraging.

Manuel Still an Idiot:
Runners on 2nd & 3rd, bottom of the 8th inning, 1 out, score tied at 2 with Freddy Galvis at the plate.  Manuel lets him bat.  Dumb!  Those stupid "Freddy! Freddy! Freddy!" chants didn't help the helpless hack succeed. Should have pinch-hit Orr, Pierre, or Nix in that situation instead of keeping them for later.  Between the crappy offense, crappy bullpen, and crappy managing of the crappy offense and crappy bullpen it's going to be difficult to make the playoffs this season.  Oh, that's encouraging.

i almost had a seizure watching freddy galvis hit. the whole at-bat i was screaming, "there's still time to send up a pinch hitter!" as loud as i could. apparently, charlie didn't here me.

losing i can handle. i'm a phillies fan. but this mismanagement of very basic, simple situations is killing me.

I know we've complained about Charlie in the past, but like I've said, the Phils were good enough to overcome his poor managing.

Not anymore. Manuel is hurting the team.

Charlie is a nice guy, but it really is time for a change, and perferrably someone with a brain for the game.

Remember when Domonic Brown was the next big thing?

He committed his 5th error of the season last night and is currently batting .247/.645, yuck.

I just realized that the Phillies have actually managed to get to 8th place in the NL in terms of runs scored. And yet they are getting worse. What the hell is with this bullpen? Isn't relief pitching supposed to be the one thing that we've got on the farm! Star calling people up NOW.

Diekman instead of Sanches would be a good start.

Schwimer needs to go too.

From Zolecki:
It is May 8. The Phillies are 30 games into the season, and they are last in the National League East.

They have not been in last place this late in a season since July 8, 2005.

Thirteen times the Phillies had a chance to move to .500. They lost eight times. Six times they had a chance to move over .500. They lost every time. This is a team that boasts Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels in its rotation. It has Jonathan Papelbon as its closer. It has Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz in its lineup.

Last place.

It feels like the Phillies are just waiting for the winning streak to happen because it has happened in the past. Like they are entitled to good things because of their recent successes.

Worry? Why worry? We’ve won five consecutive National League East championships.

At times it also feels like they are waiting for Ryan Howard and Chase Utley to save the day. But like Jayson Werth correctly pointed out this weekend in DC, the Phillies aren’t the only team that is banged up. Before Werth broke his wrist Sunday, the Nationals were in first place without Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Morse and Adam LaRoche. Imagine the Nationals lineup when those three and Werth are back.

Where does Bryce Harper hit then?

Maybe this is who the Phillies are. Maybe they are no better than a .500 team. (I’ve been waiting for Charlie Manuel to gather his team and say something, but so far that hasn’t happened.) If the Phillies are a winning team they need to start playing like one quickly. The July 31 trade deadline gets closer every day. If I’m Ruben Amaro Jr. and my team is no better than .500 come mid-July, I’d seriously consider trading some of my more valuable talent in an attempt to reload for 2013.

The Phillies have committed too much money to be a loser. This cannot continue.

*My (GM-Carson) thoughts- thank God somebody close to the Phillies had the balls to say this. Nicely done Zolecki. Much respect.

Why hasn't Miguel Bautista been bombed for 10+ runs already. C'mon!

we must really be going back to the 90s. beavis and butthead revival, donkey kong country gets a new sequel, and the phillies suck at winning again.

I will admit I was a bandwagoner who got into the Phillies after 2008. The fact that I'm still watching now proves I'm a true phan.

Everything's got a silver lining, right?
