Philadelphia Phillies 2012 Roster

Aside from some possible minor league signings or a bullpen arm, the Philadelphia Phillies 2012 roster seems to be complete.

Lineup:
1. Jimmy Rollins/SS
2. Shane Victorino/CF
3. Chase Utley/2B
4. Ryan Howard/1B
5. Hunter Pence/RF
6. John Mayberry/LF
7. Placido Polanco/3B
8. Carlos Ruiz/C

Bench:
Brian Schneider/C, Ty Wigginton 3B/1B/OF, Laynce Nix/OF, Jim Thome/1B/PH, and Wilson Valdez/UTL.

Rotation:
1. Roy Halladay
2. Cliff Lee
3. Cole Hamels
4. Vance Worley
5. Joe Blanton

Bullpen:
1. Jonathan Papelbon
2. Antonio Bastardo
3. Jose Contreras
4. Michael Stutes
5. Dontrelle Willis
6. Kyle Kendrick
7. Michael Schwimer

Other Scenarios:
Pete Orr/UTL, Scott Podsednik/OF, or Michael Martinez/UTL are likely candidates to start the season on the 25-man roster should Howard be placed on the DL.

Justin DeFratus, David Herndon, Brian Sanches, and Joe Savery are relief pitchers vying for the final spot in the bullpen.

Caught this gem from Joe Posnanski:

Mulholland was a sinker-slider pitcher whose defining quality was probably his remarkable pickoff move. He was quite hittable, and he gave up almost 300 home runs in his career. But nobody, and I mean nobody, ran on Terry Mulholland. In his 20-year career there were only 35 successful stolen bases against him. I’m not entirely sure how Baseball Reference breaks this up, but according to the numbers, there were 50 players who were caught stealing and Mulholland had 53 pickoffs in his career. I think there is some crossover there. In his 1992 season, he had 15 pickoffs and only two people were successful stealing on him all year.

He forgot to mention he threw a no-no on August 16, 1990. We had tickets to that game but couldn't go, so we gave them to a neighbor. At the 1991 Phillies carnival I got him to sign his 1990 Topps card with the date of his no-no. I still have it.

BTW, that roster looks both comfortably and uncomfortably familiar. Does anyone else feel that way?

The roster is old and injury prone.

We're relying on Utley being healthy an entire (hahaha) and Howard coming back quickly (also- hahaha). Not to mention putting trust in Mayberry. Luckily Nix is available for a platoon.

The bench is improved though. Wigginton and Thome help.

Very Accurate. Nix can play 1B too.

I still think we need to sign Beltran for 1-2 years. There will always be at least 1 Phillie Batter on the DL next year.

And Hamels.

Locking up Hamels to an extension should be next. I say throw him 5 yr/$90M.

I agree that the bench has been upgraded nicely. I also like Carson's offer to Hamels, but do you think his agent will let him go for less than 9 figures? I feel like it's a symbolic benchmark for marquee players.

Don't forget that Polly will break down at some point too.

Alden keeps hammering home the point, but I just can't see Beltran fitting in on this roster. I'd rather bring back Madson to set up for Papelbon (which I now realize will never happen) for the same money that could sign Beltran.

The Phillies lost Carlos Rivero to the Nationals on waivers. Not that he's anything special, but he might have a future as a utility infielder, so why not protect him on the 40-man roster instead of some slouch like John Bowker.

Jered Weaver's recent $85MM extension also covered one arbitration season and four free agent years.

$90MM for Cole Hamels sounds about right.

They are not old. They are in prime. Early 30's for most.

Utley, Howard, and Rollins are in decline. Not opinion- statistical fact.

That's just three guys. I would bet Utley will have a much better year. Ruiz, Victorino, Pence are at top of game. Polanco is older but had such an off year chances are he will do better.
