Phillies Do The Obvious

The Phillies did the obvious today and declined the options on Brad Lidge and Roy Oswalt. Amaro reluctantly forked over $3.5M in contract buyouts rather than ante up for $28.5M between the two of them. This nets them $25M, so it was a smart decision.

"We will remain in contact with representatives for both players about the possibility of bringing them back for the 2012 season,” said the omnipotent one Ruben Amaro Jr.

In my opinion, Phils have more pressing needs than retaining either of their services, but at the right price, I'd welcome both back. Lidge 1 year $1.5M with incentives. Oswalt 2 years $16M. However, each likely wants more, and rightfully so...so sayonara.

I would welcome Lidge back for free and not one penny more. I'd bring Oswalt back for 6 mil. one year.

I see Oswalt getting 2 years $20M (not with the Phils).

Lidge's will have to be incentive based, because he has major control and injury issues.

Spot on GM-Carson

Oswalt will get 2 years @$20M

Lidge will want $2M I would want him back as am arm for that.

Bye to both. Never really liked Oswalt anyway, and his numbers were hardly the stuff of a beloved fan favorite. Spend the moolah from both on one good arm for the pen, and for an infielder.

Lidge would be nice to have back on the cheap. Oswalt isn't really needed with Blanton/Kendrick still around but I wouldn't complain if hes back for around $8mil a yr for no more than 2 years.

The bull pen has lots of young arms who are good: Bastardo, Stutes, Schwimmer, DeFrautus, Aumont, Savery and a few who can help if needed Kendrick, Herndon and also Contreras back. If Madson and or Lidge return the pen should be fine. They young pitchers for the most part are unproven so there could be some rough spots at times but they have the potential of being dominate. If those 6 can't put things together early on then Ruben will just need to make a trade or 2 to fix it mid season.

It's difficult to go with a bullpen full of unproven youngsters when you're a World Series hopefuly team, but this is the path the Phils might feel compeled to take.

Promising relief pitchers is one thing the Phils have in their farm system.

You seriously all want Lidge back?? ....really? He's got one pitch and there is about a 100percent chance he will get hurt again. I wouldn't spend a nicole on him.

Spend a "nicole"...what's that?

Ha

Someone once spent a Nicole on me, and I needed a shot of penicillin afterwards.

If Contreras is back next year, he will need one of those scooters the old folks riding around the mall use.

They need a reliable, mature, intelligent guy in the pen....none there now ck all those boxes, including Big Toe Madson.
