Battle of the Lefties

The path to the National League Championship Series has become a best of 3 challenge. The battlefield turns to Busch Stadium in St. Louis where two fierce lefties will duel to the death. Jaime Garcia for the Cardinals and Cole Hamels for the Phillies. Each with an impressive pedigree and credentials.

Garcia has stymied Philadelphia over his 3 years, twirling a 1.20 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over 30 innings. Hamels has not been as dominate, but he sports a respectable 3.27 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 55 innings against the Red Birds.

Showdown starts at 5:07 on TBS. May the best man win...

5:07? shit. by the time i get to a tv hamels will have given up 4 runs. unluckily.

by the way, i hate the short series for the first round. 5 games is way too short for a baseball playoff. the first thing i would change as commissioner would be to make all playoff series 7 games.

I have a very bad feeling about today's game. I know that means nothing to the actual outcome, but I could easily see Garcia shut the Phils down over 8, while Hamels also pitches well, but end up losing 2-1.

As I see it, if the Cards don't sweep at home there is no damn way we lose this series......there aint no way in hell anyone beats Doc in Philly for game 5.

Prediction- Cards win today, because Phils can't hit Garcia.

Phils then lose tomorrow, because Oswalt gets lit and the bullpen is leaky.

Phils begin a long offseason to ponder how they just shit the bed in what was supposed to be their World Series.

In 2007 I wasn't that mad the Phils were 3 and out. I was just happy to have them in the postseason.

2008...WFC.

2009, back to the World Series, so that was awesome too.

Last year was pretty successful, just got outpitched by San Fran.

This year, I'll be pissed as hell if they don't at least get to the WS.

Failing to get a sac bunt down at this point in the season is not acceptable!!!

Who is that Tim Reading out there???
Jesus titty balls phillies score some damn runs!!

Hamels cost himself a run because of that.

Hamels has 56 pitches through 3 innings, while Garcia is mowing the Phils down without any fight from them.

There may be nothing I hate more in this life than watching howards one handed upper cut pull swings at left handed curve balls.

Howard could have justified his entire contract extension to me (I know big whoop) with an extra base hit in that spot.

No clutch hitting from this team right now. The Cardinals are getting a solid performance from someone different each game while the only one in the Phils lineup playing over his head is Rollins.

It seems that the corners are being called without consistency this entire series.

Even with 110 pitches, I wonder if Hamels will come out for the 7th b/c we have no lockdown 7th inning option. Lidge? Please. Worley or Blanton are the best bets, and they have little to no late-inning pressure-situation experience.

The Cardinals took a Yankees-like approach to watch pitches and made Hamels come to them. Although the results were good through 6, it took him out of the game and played to the Cardinal's advantage and Phils' weakness.

Lastly, Garcia - a Phillies killer - showed signs of tiredness in the 6th in that more of his pitches were over the plate. Perhaps this is a trend that will continue and one that the Phils will actually take advantage of in the 7th.

I jumped off the couch and scared the piss out of my dog after Francisco's shot. Wooo!!!!!

Maybe he can play 3rd base.

i don't know if my nerves will allow me to watch another inning from the phillies bullpen...

3-1, tense game. Hamels was good. Benny Fran potential hero. Worley going for inning 2 in relief. Lets see how this plays out.

GM-Carson said...

Ryan Theriot is this series' Cody Ross. Un-friggin-believable. Killin' the Phils. 6-8 now.

Brad Lidge sucks. Or maybe he's just unlucky.

Dear Charlie,
Perhaps now is not the time to panic. I respect your managing abilities, but trying to match wits and moves with Tony LaRussa may not be the best strategy. Maybe you should have given a sharp looking Tony Bastard a chance to succeed.
Oh. As I wrote that last paragraph - double play. So uhhh, all is forgiven. You're the best.

Sincerely,
PJ

great commment.

i was just thinking to myself, "damn, this inning was managed as poorly as possible" and then, blammo!, a double play.

now i can't help but think that there is no way this team can win a world series when the best bullpen option in the 7th inning of an important playoff game (outside of ryan madson) is a rookie 5th starter who isn't even a reliever.

cardinals fans just demonstrated the weakest rally towel waving i've ever seen. the "best fans in baseball" obviously don't understand the impact towels can have in the playoffs.

Hamels is a beast.

Hamels was good. They were giving a lot of tough at bats and fouling off a lot of good pitches.
