Phillies August Report Card

The Phillies just finished off a dominating 4 game sweep on the Reds in Cincy, and only allowed 6 runs to the highest scoring offense in the NL. Times are good. Times are 41 games over .500 good (87-46). Lets takes a look back and August and see how the individuals graded out.

Carlos Ruiz/C .329/.793, 9 R, 6 RBI. Chooch might have the bat of Brian McCann or the vaunted defense of Yadier Molina, but he's a great backstop for this team. Grade: A.

Ryan Howard/1B .225/.820, 15 R, 8 HR, 22 RBI, 36 K. Love his RBI. Hate his K's and batting average. Grade: B-.

Chase Utley/2B .245/.662, 13 R, 7 DBL, 8 RBI. He's missed part of the season, but he's still doing his late season fade. Grade: C-.

Placido Polanco/3B .280/.613, 3 R, 0 XBH, 2 RBI. Polly got old in a hurry. His bat has no punch in it. He's nothing but an 8 hole hitter now. Grade- D+.

Jimmy Rollins/SS .261/.720, 13 R, 11 RBI, 4 SB. This team needs a healthy and productive J-Roll come playoff time. Grade: B-.

Raul Ibanez/LF .210/.576, 8 R, 8 RBI. OPS per month: April- .466, May- .941, June- .569, July- .878, August- .576. Notice a pattern? Raul is do for a strong month of September at least. Grade: D.

Shane Victorino/CF .316/.993, 19 R, 13 XBH, 16 RBI. Great defense, great bat. Not only is he the team's offensive MVP, but he starting to nudge into the NL MVP conversation. Grade: A+.

Hunter Pence/RF .340/1.009, 17 R, 7 HR, 16 RBI. Already a fan favorite, "Good game, lets go eat". Grade: A+.

Wilson Valdez/UTL .278/.804, 9 R, 7 XBH, 10 RBI. Great month for the half man/half goat. Grade: A.

Michael Martinez/UTL .179/.393, 3 R, 2 RBI. Nobody can convince me that he doesn't suck. Grade: D.

John Mayberry/OF .296/1.041, 12 R, 6 HR, 15 RBI. Deserves as many plate appearances as Charlie can get him. Grade: A+.

Brian Schneider/C .143/.383, 2 R, 3 RBI. Sometimes I forget he's even on the team. Grade: D.

Ross Gload/PH .067/.200, 0 R, 0 RBI. Sometimes I wish I would forget he's even on the team. Grade: release him!

Ben Francisco/OF .500/1.295, 2 R, 1 RBI. Only saw the plate 10 times the entire month. Yikes. Grade: A.

Roy Halladay 3-1, 5 GS, 34.1 IP, 6 BB:39 K, 2.62 ERA, 1.17 WHIP. Looked great at times, looked tired at others. At this point, we're just spoiled. Grade: A-.

Cliff Lee 5-0, 5 GS, 39.2 IP, 8 BB:39 K, 0.45 ERA, 0.78 WHIP. He's pretty good I guess. Grade: A+.

Cole Hamels 1-1, 4 GS, 26 IP, 5 BB:22 K, 2.42 ERA, 1.00 WHIP. Cole could easily have 15-20 more wins over the past 3 seasons if the Phils supplied better run support for him. Grade: A.

Roy Oswalt 2-2, 4 GS, 26.2 IP, 5 BB:20 K, 3.71 ERA, 1.61 WHIP. Something just doesn't seem right with Roy2. Grade: B-.

Vance Worley 2-0, 4 GS, 21 IP, 5 BB:23 K, 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP. The Vanimal would take the 4th spot in my postseason rotation over Oswalt. Grade: B.

Ryan Madson 0-1, 10 G, 9.2 IP, 2 BB:7 K, 7.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 7 SV. Had one horrific outing (blown save, 6 r), but other than that was decent. Grade: C.

Antonio Bastardo 2-0, 10 G, 10.1 IP, 3 BB:14 K, 1.74 ERA, 0.68 WHIP, 6 HLD. Tony Bastard! Grade: A.

David Herndon 1-0, 7 G, 10.1 IP, 0 BB:8 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.68 WHIP. He's been remarkable reliable since July 16th. Grade: A+.

Kyle Kendrick 2-1, 5 G, 3 GS, 22 IP, 5 BB:15 K, 2.45 ERA, 1.14 WHIP. KK is the perfect swingman. Grade: A-.

Brad Lidge 0-1, 9 G, 7.1 IP, 7 BB:9 K, 1.23 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, 1 SV, 3 HLD. His ERA is very deceiving, because he's constantly walking a tightrope with disaster. Grade: B.

Michael Stutes 10 G, 12.1 IP, 4 BB: 9 K, 5.84 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 2 HLD. Why does the weakest link of the bullpen have the most innings logged in August? He was scored upon in half his appearances. Grade: D.

Not Receiving Grades: Pete Orr and Michael Schwimer.
