Series Preview - Giants

Philadelphia Phillies (71-39) at San Francisco Giants (62-49)

Season Series:
Philles 1-2 Giants

Pitching Matchups:
Thursday, 10:15 - Cliff Lee v. Madison Bumgarner
Friday, 10:15 - Vance Worley v. Jonathan Sanchez
Saturday, 4:10 - Cole Hamels v. Matt Cain
Sunday, 4:05 - Roy Oswalt v. Ryan Vogelsong

Behemoths Batting:
Runs - 393 (28th)
AVG - .240 (27th)
OBP - .304 (28th)
SLG - .358 (28th)

Behemoths Pitching:
ERA - 3.16 (2nd)
WHIP - 1.22 (3rd)
BAA - .229 (1st)

Their Michael Martinez:
Mike Fontenot - This former first round pick by the Orioles (19th overall in 2001) has a career .263 average. However, he's down to .208 this season. He lacks power (24 career homers) and speed (17 career steals) but he can play all the infield spots so he'll probably stick around until his average dips below .180.

Their Danys Baez:
Dan Runzler had a 6.41 ERA in 18 appearances before being booted. Barry Zito and his 5.62 ERA is currently on the DL. The pitcher on the active roster with the highest ERA is reliever Guillermo Mota at 4.14.

What We're Drinking:
Corey - Sangria. I've never made sangria before. Hell, I've never even drank sangria before, but I'm going to try it this weekend. Right now my plan is to throw some brandy and fruit into a pitcher along with a bottle of red wine. If anybody has an actual recipe throw it in the comment section. Thanks.

Carson - Troegs Scratch #45 & #46. A "scratch beer" is a one time production, so it's limited release to the mid-state...where luckily, I live. #45 is an IPA with a lingering bitterness and citrus nose. #46 is Naked Elf Ale, which is a stripped down version of their enormously popular Christmas brew Mad Elf.

Prediction:
There will be many mentions in the media ('net, newspaper, TV) about how this is a "playoff preview" and how the Giants "have the Phillies' number" and that the Phils need wins to get "confidence" and more bullshit along this line. Then the Phils will win 2 of 4 and people will realize that this series means absolutely nothing when predicting future meetings. We'll all move on to the next series and this one will not be mentioned again until these two teams meet in the playoffs. Then we'll have to hear all of this crap again.

Elsewhere:
Check out the pic and article about the Williamsport Crosscutters bus accident. Scary.

In national news, Alex Rodriguez is being investigated for playing a few hands of poker for money. This should be no big deal but let's all hope A-Rod stays out of trouble because I know another superstar who plays a few hands now and then... Roy Halladay!

It's hard to believe, considering I hate wine, that I've had a few sangria's in my day and you haven't Corey. I think you'll enjoy it.

I'm hoping for 3 outta 4 this series. Tough against the Giants pitching staff, but they can do it.

sangria is primarily made for chicks, so it's not that unsurprising. i still haven't had a smirnoff ice or a zima. [do they still make those?]

I am drinking MacAllen 18 yr scotch because I need to reestablish my manhood after getting bitchspalled by Sir Alden.

I've tried Zima, because it's "zomething zifferet". Smirnoff Ice is decent, but gives me heartburn. I like my craft beers instead.

I'm predicting J-Roll hits his 2nd triple of the season in SanFran this weekend. It will be the 100th of his career.

Any chance Lidge gets 13 more saves as a Phillie to knock Joe Table down a notch?

Andrew- with the amazing job Bastardo and Madson have done closing this year, I'm hoping there won't be 13 more chances for Lidge to close games. Hopefully yesterday was a rare occasion where Lidge is needed in a save situation.

Carson - agreed!

Smart to sit Utley and Ibanez against Bum-something-or-other. Mayberry already went deep in place of Raul, and Valdez...well, is Valdez.
