Confidence Meters - August 2011

-

The Big Three are delivering almost every start. The Vanimal is currently the best fourth starter in baseball. And Roy Oswalt is working his way back into shape. And if something goes wrong, they've got shut-out throwing Kyle Kendrick to make a few spot starts. Can't beat this rotation right now.

My confidence might not match the average statistics (see Carson's post from last night below) but now they have Hunter Pence and I'm totally drinking the Kool-Aid in believing he totally changes the potential of this lineup. Also, Chase Utley looks great and Ryan Howard is mashing.

From Carson's post the other day - Phillies closers are 32 for 33 in save chances with a 1.13 ERA. Brad Lidge is back but NOT closing games, which is good. And I'm not underestimateding the power of subtracting Danys Baez. Now, if only one of those AAA relievers mentioned in the minor league wrap-up would come up and contribute...

One comment on the offense: would it kill Howard to take a walk every now and then? Now that Pence is hitting behind him, he needs to adjust his approach and take a few pitches.

While he is somehow walking more than last year (it seems hard to believe to me). He is walking almost 50% less now than during his first two seasons.

Season BB per Plate Appearance
2006 .153 (or 15% of PAs)
2007 .165
2008 .116
2009 .107
2010 .095
2011 .108

Geez, take a walk, will ya?

Howard has poor plate discipline. Something that's doubtful to change at this stage of his career. Early in his career teams weren't sure how to attack him. They either gave him fat pitches or pitched around him.

Howard hit 2 Homeruns Last Night.

If I was delivering for my family,
working hard, leading the neighborhood (most RBI's) and you were my wife and you made a comment like that about something I could do better wifey jon, and wifey carson...

I would say "yes dear, I understand" then I would hate fuck you both wifey jon and wife carson, slap you upside your face, and move onto a new fan - my beautiful secretary - leaving you in a poverty of reduced funds and RBI's and a continual string of Vacations and Playoff Experiences.

Thank god, both of you were not able have children.

SirAlden, I wasn't bashing Howard, simply reiterating that he has poor plate discipline. Nobody is denying he's a prolific homerun and RBI man. So please do bitch slap me sir.

See what I mean, can't take a walk.

Howard K's on a horrible pitch with the bases loaded and no out in the top of the 1st after the pitcher walked the bases loaded.

Shut up SirAlden!

Who's that pitching for the Phils...looks like Doc but something's not quite right.

So, if he does a double Howard, is there some bonus money in it to top up the $25 million already going into the bank?

Is anyone else worried about Halladay?
Seems like he's had men on base every inning for like a month and a half.

Halladay looks horrible today. It happens, but it's painful to watch.
