Another Howard, Another Win

Since the stat's creation prior to the 2009 season, the Phillies have committed 14 Howards. Its namesake, Ryan Howard, collected his first of the year yesterday, and with that victory over the Rockies, the Phils are now 11-3 in games in which The Howard is performed by a Phillie. That's a .786 winning percentage.

The Howard- a feat accomplished when a player hits a homerun, strikes out, and commits an error all in the same game.

Only 1 of the 3 criteria is something positive that would aid in winning a ball game (HR). However, WSBGMs has uncovered irrefutable evidence to prove that when a Phillie commits The Howard in a game it will inevitably end with a W for the good guys. The same cannot be said for the remaining 29 teams' players that commit The Howard, as it seems it's only Karmic retribution for the Phightins.

2011 Howards by Phillies:
Chase Utley - July 2, Phils over Blue Birds 5-3.
John Mayberry Jr. - July 6, Fish over Phils 7-6.
Cliff Lee - July 9, Braves over Phils 4-1.
Chase Utley - July 29, Phils over Buccos 10-3.
Ryan Howard - August 3, Phils over Rox 8-6.

I don't understand at how pointing out Howard's flaws and hating his ridiculous extension equals disliking Howard as a player and wishing him gone.

I want Howard on this team. I appreciate his strengths (homeruns, RBI). Hell, I'll even give him credit for improved defense, especially at scooping balls thrown to him by other fielders. He still can't throw worth poop though.

From the Inky and
Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is seeing more fastballs since OF Hunter Pence has joined the team. Since the acquisition of Pence, Howard has hit .409 (9-for-22) with a 1.595 OPS. "I've seen a lot more fastballs at least this series," Howard said. "HP is getting it done. If they want to keep throwing me fastballs, I'm not going to get mad at them."

Oh, and for what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Jason Weitzel, BeerLeaguer's guru, reads our site on a regular basis.

WSBGMs, Phillies Nation, and BeerLeaguer are the original gangsters of the Phlogsphere.
