A Losing Howard?

John Mayberry Jr. collected the first Howard of his career last night. In the past when a Phillie performs this dubious act of hitting a homerun, striking out, and committing an error they have gone on to win. In fact, as recently as Saturday the Phillies were riding a 9-game win streak on such occasions. Last night's contest ended differently, but it was Charlie Manuel's fault, not Mayberry's.

Why the hell was Manuel so antsy to get into the Phillies bullpen yesterday? I know they haven't seen a lot of action lately with the way the starting pitchers have been tossing, but some of them are better off not seeing anything but the bullpen mound (Carpenter, Mathieson, Herndon, Baez). Kyle Kendrick wasn't pitching a gem, but he had gone 5 innings while only allowing 1 earned run by deploying 81 pitches. KK was good for another 1 or 2 innings, or at least let him pitch until he got into a bit of jam. By taking the game to the bullpen so early, Manuel was pressing his luck, and that luck bitch slapped him in the face. Aside from Stutes and Bastardo, this current group of misfits in relief are questionable at best. Get as many outs from your starting pitcher as possible is normally the plan, but not for good ol' Chuck. Way to manage that pitching staff Charlie, it's your true strong suit. Not!

2011 Howards by Phillies:
Chase Utley - July 2, Phils over Blue Birds 5-3.
John Mayberry Jr. - July 6, Fish over Phils 7-6.

2010 Howards by Phillies:
Ryan Howard - April 7, Phils over Gnats 8-4
Ryan Howard - April 28, Phils over Giants 7-6.
Jayson Werth - May 6, Phils over Braves 7-2.
Chase Utley - May 14, Phils over Brew Crew 9-5.
Jimmy Rollins - June 23, Phils over Indians 7-6.
Ryan Howard- July 9, Phils over Reds 9-7.
Ryan Howard- July 27, Phils over DBacks 9-5.
Ryan Howard- September 2, Phils over Rox 12-11.

Other Stuff:
*The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs were no-hit yesterday.

*Domonic Brown's defense has been very suspect. He takes bad angles, doesn't always hustle, and commits errors. This needs to improve.

*The 25th man on the roster, Michael Martinez, started his 3rd straight game. His amazing defense and speed won the game for the Phils. Oh, wait, no it didn't.

*Why is Baez Sucks still on this team?

*The Phils are currently with a 10-man pitching staff and 2 players short on the bench because of the injuries to Polanco and Victorino. DL them both retroactively and call up somebody for the time being. This also gets Polly and most likely Victorino out of the All-Star game.

In defense of Manual, he has been sticking with his starters longer than normal, this was an exception. This team is really hurting now. Not in wins but in injuries.

I try to imagine Charlie before a game like yesterday.

"Alright, Herndon, Carpenter, Baez, in my office now!. Look guys, I don't expect to win when Kendrick is out there so be ready to pitch, even if it's a close game."

Imagine puzzled looks on their faces.

"Yes, Baez, I know your name has changed, but don't let that get you down, you were great in Cleveland.

"And you Herndon. Don't worry. Even if your terrible, Ruben is in love with his rule 5 guys, so your job if safe.

"And Carpenter. Well I dunno. Um. It'll be nice for you to get a little work in before we ship your ass back to the minors.

"Go get'm guys!"

Earned runs by Kendrick are not a good metric of whether he was doing well or not. Good pitchers deal with a bad defensive play. He threw only 58% strikes and put 9 guys on base in 5 innings. Leave him out there and he'll give up even more runs after that. He would likely regress to the mean if he stayed in longer because he is not good. The low-level bullpen guys have an equal chance of blowing the game as Kendrick.

As in, Durbin Blows? God was I glad to see his ass on that train to Cleveland. Too bad he was alone with a one- way ticket.
