Harsh Reality of Phillies Offense

The Phillies have scored 3 runs or less 31 times this season and they've only played 57 games, that's 54% of the time.

22nd ranked OPS of .690 in 2011. 2010- .745 (11th), 2009- .781 (6th), 2008- .770 (7th), 2007- .812 (2nd). Notice an extreme downward trend? Of course apologists will point to an overall downward trend in OPS across baseball. Then I'll retaliate with the Phillies playing half their games in one of the most hitter friendly parks in baseball and the fact that they're still well below the MLB average.

At bats per homerun: 2011- 41.5, 2010- 33.6, 2009- 24.9, 2008- 25.7, 2007- 26.7. They are weak.

Drum roll please...
But, but, but the Phillies have only played 1 game with an intact offense this season (Rollins, Polanco, Utley, Howard, Victorino, Ibanez, Brown, Ruiz).

Don't get too excited. The average age of the starting 8 is 31.75, oldest lineup in baseball. Most of them are past their prime years.

As a witty commenter on BeerLeaguer lamented- "Aces & Disgraces."

Well, at least the Phils Kyle Kendrick pitching today...

Screw Michael Martinez!

Yes their OPS has decreased over the last few years as has all across baseball - but look at their rankings (2, 7, 6, 11, & 22). That shows compared to the other teams they have lost ground.

the Phils are also in violation of the debt policy of MLB. This could mean bad news to retain Rollins, Madson, and others next year. Maybe thats why they keep your favorite prime time player Michael Martinez on the roster. He can play SS, too bad he can't bat.

Onsite memorabilia sales are a huge part of budget making. I could support the cause.. What number does Zagurski wear? (and can I hitch a ride to Philly)

I would almost dismiss their debt situation- if it was bad, we would have heard about it before yesterday. MLB allowed them to sign the Lee deal, meaning they weren't so worried then, and what would have gone better up to now? They've sold a lot of gear since then, sold the stadium out every day, and appear to be one of the best moneymakers in the game. I think this is a lot about nothing. Besides, they have a "silent partner" who could buy four or five teams and their debt if he wanted, so it's a non-issue.

Now, on the field... one game with the full line-up guys. One. And even then, it's not like Charlie is letting Dom and Chase go full-time yet, so we need to be patient. At this point, the key to them winning this year is health. Oswalt needs to get back to being Oswalt, we need a healthy five, and this line-up needs to play every day. They're not 2007, but they're not garbage either.

doesn't the debt policy have more to do with the day to day operations of the team than players salaries?

Get some young quality bats in here. I really don't care who they trade. I can't watch another 2-1, 44 inning loss to the Pirates where the pirates only have 3 hits but we can't score. It's bullsht.

I know it doesn't happen in basbeall, but if i was Halladay, i might have to have a word with the rest of the line up.

Gload to DL, Mayberry recalled.

Screw Michael Martinez.

Why do they insist on keeping a player who does nothing well?

Well JRoll now injured hopefully nothing more than just a day off thing. If not we may see more of Screw Martinez playing and management saying I told you he was valuable.

Pathetic pathetic pathetic pathetic pathetic. No one on this team can hit. Nobody. They are all old and not one of them can hit anything but a fastball.

if the GM of the phillies doesn't do or say something soon getting Holiday, and Lee which looked like a sure trip to the world series their impotent offence will make this season a bigger bust then 1964 phillies.somebody had better put a fire in the locker room before its to late ,what i'm seeing from this team is truely imbaressing great pitching ,6 alstars and they only score 1,2 maybe 3 runs a game Holiday and Lee wander whats up.Ruben you better get the ship rite before it totally sinks

they can't even hit with the bases loaded!

this team is not major league caliber.

Ryan Howard screwed the game up last night. Rolling over on pitches with runners in scoring position. He's playing like shit. Of course so is the rest of the offense.

Note:
Gload is on paternity leave, not DL. Mayberry only here for 3 days tops.
