Opening Day 2011

Just a few tidbits before the Phils open their 2011 season...

Weather:
It's currently in the 30's and raining/snowing in Philadelphia. Fortunately, weather.com says that by 1:00 the chance of precipitation is only 25% and the temp should be a balmy 45 degrees.

The Howard:
Despite only a few games yesterday, two "Howards" were accomplished. The first was by Royal Mike Aviles. The second was by me personal hero and WSBGMs Hall of Famer, Pat Burrell. Speaking of Burrell, did everyone get to see these Burrell pics from over the summer? If not, enjoy:

The Statue:
The Phillies announced yesterday that they will be accepting the Harry Kalas statue that has been put together by a few fans and supported by many more. The location of the statue relative to the park or the time of unveiling is still to be determined. You can see the statue at www.harrykalasstatue.com.

The Game:
Doc Halladay v. WSBGMs Hall of Famer Brett Myers, 1:05, ESPN

Advantage for the Astros: Bill Hall is motivated. See the story here. Unfortunately, Hall won't get his revenge on Hamels but maybe he will take it out on Halladay...

Advantage for the Phillies: Myers is 9-13 in April and hasn't given up less than three runs in his first start of the season since 2005. (*The Phillies lost that Myers start in 2005 after Todd Worrell gave up 4 runs in 1/3 an inning.)

Enjoy the start of the 2011 baseball sprint marathon.

Quick 1st inning. I'm thinking 1-0 Phils today.

alright, let's get roy some runs...

that's why he's a WSBGMs Hall of Famer.

Halladay was safe at 1st base.

Benny Fran turns a fly out into a double. Ugh.

This Phillies offense sure is good. They're tearing Myers apart.

Ha.

Valdez screwed up 2 plays today too. Messed up the double play that Rollins could have turned, and now let a ball roll under his glove for a "single".

Werth and Utley's defense will be sorely missed too, not just their bats.

how is this possible? it's only the first game of the season but already it's exactly what we thought the phils would look like:
- the offense is as inept as many predicted. brett myers has as many hits as the phils
- the right side of the defense is not very good, as expected, with errors or poor plays by howard, valdez and francisco
- halladay is a freaking beast
- manuel is already making questionable moves with the bullpen, as romero comes in for one batter in the 7th then leaves b/c he's not good enough to face the 8 and 9 batters. what?
- the bullpen immediately gives up a shit ton of runs

We Love You Phillies!!!

Thank God! GM-Carson convinced me of the wisdom of signing Danny Baez to a Two Year Contract!

There was a ton to hate in that game (defense, middle relief, poor baserunning, and managerial decisions), but they won on a killer 9th and the W is what matters. Win #1.

Go figure Baez Sucks picked up the victory.

Why are David Herndon and Michael Martinez on this team?

The Phils need a reliever that can miss bats, and Herndon doesn't do that. He pitches to contact and gives up a ton of hits. Why not give Mathieson or Stutes a chance?

Martinez is versatile, but so are Orr and Valdez. This team needs another left handed batting option after Gload and Delwyn Young is a switch hitter.

Just saying.

Was at the game thanks to a surprise gift from my wife and here are my thoughts:

- For 8 innings this game played out like everyone feared the Phils' season would: great pitching (although it appered Halladay couldn't get any calls on the corners), less than stellar defense, and lackluster offense.

- The 9th inning revitalized some hopes because of the fashion in which they won: paper cuts.

- Am I the only one who didn't think Valdez would ground into a double play at the end of the game? I got two texts from friends suggesting that.

- The new lineup is tough to follow. The old lineup had such a natural progression and you always new who was coming up next in the order. At the game I constantly found myself turning to look at the new scoreboard.

- Speaking of the scoreboard, that thing gives a picture brighter and clearer than real life. It's amazing! But there are two drawbacks. It's a bit cluttered and hard to find the information you want with a single glance. Also, advertisements next to each batter, really? Has it come to this? During the 5th inning everyone had a stuffed bird next to them advertising some show at the Philadelphia Zoo and I thought I was in Fraggle Rock. Wack.

- Lastly, Halladay was safe at first and it was clear even from Section 331.

Yeah, I saw that new big screen firsthand on Wednesday and it's amazing!

The win was awesome, but they just singled them to death. Where's the power in this lineup aside from Howard?

Burrell is creepy.

Hey I got it, maybe sometime we can get a picture together of Pat in his tidy whities and Martino in his speedo and they can team up as Batman and Robin! Just not sure which will be which! Martino is creepy too!
