Phillies Operation- The Game

Chase Utley has a history of fibbing about injuries. The Phillies brass has a history of downplaying injuries. That's a combustible combination. Utley has patellar tendonitis in his right knee and got a cortisone injection in it this past weekend. Utley, who has been limited to batting practice only, has not felt/seen any improvement yet and that is becoming extremely worrisome. Might there be a deeper problem? What we do know is that Utley is a tough ass and has played through pain before, so the fact that he's still sidelined by this is puzzling and troublesome.

Throughout the history of baseball, players have played with and through physical ailments. It's only been in the last 30-40 years as salaries have skyrocketed that players have become coddled and babied. Got a headache? Out of the game. Got a hangnail? Out for 3 days. Something hurts? Out for weeks. In the old days, you just played....and on an average income to boot.

I admire Utley for being a "gamer", meaning he plays through most injuries. That's the part that troubles me though, because right now he's not playing and that makes me think there's something worse going on. I know games don't mean anything in spring training and maybe they're just being overly cautious, but it's still worrisome nonetheless.

I believe if someone just removes the bucket of water from the knee all will be well.

Howard with his 3rd homerun today in the Phils win.

Something to watch- Lidge pitching poorly.

In a day or two we are going to find out Utley is going to fly back to Philadelphia for further testing.
Then they will do a second MRI that magically reveals and injury in the knee that the first MRI did not.
Then he will have surgery.
They will give us a recovery time of 3 to 6 months. Then we will see a bunch of articles about how Utley is a quick healer.
Utley will be back July 31st.
