Rumors, HoF & Bass

Rumors:
With Jayson Werth officially gone, the Phillies have turned their attention to signing a righthanded batting corner outfielder. Targets- Jeff Francoeur, Juan Rivera, and Matt Diaz. Francoeur is a swing-a-holic (and I don't mean key parties) that hasn't posted quality numbers since 2007. Luckily for the Phils, the Royals are also in heavy pursuit of Frenchy and their GM Dayton Moore is far stupider than Amaro. Rivera is under contract with Angels for $5.25M next year. Maybe Rube could work some magic and swap Baez for him and eat the remaining part of Rivera's contract. Then there's Diaz, who is a career .301 batter, and he mashes lefties (.335/.907). Of the 3, Diaz is my choice.

Oh yeah, Cliff Lee's name is still hanging in the air. Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reports the Phils are still serious about trying to lure the top free agent back to Philly. Not gonna happen.

Hall of Fame:
The engineer of the 2008 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies was elected to the Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Pat Gillick. Wonder if his crowning achievement will be the Adam Eaton deal.

Pump Up the Bass:
28 year old righthanded reliever Brian Bass was signed to a minor league deal who is fresh off a 12.27 ERA with the Pirates last season. He owns a career 5.16 ERA over 3 MLB seasons and gives the Phils depth at Triple A. Plus he's a possible future Phucco.

I'd have to rate those three like this (assuming we have to eat all of Rivera's salary).

1. Diaz
2. Rivera
3. Francoeur

Juan doesn't wiff as much as the other two, but he also would be around $5M/yr on his current contract

RIP to The Fightins. They had a good run of it, but for unknown reasons have shut down. Guess you'll just have to come here from now on.

Even without The Fightins, I'm amazed at how many Phillies-related blogs exist. I can't imagine the number being rivaled by any other team in any other sport.

Conlin has been elected to the Hall. Good for him, he's had a nice run of good writing. I'm happy to hear it.

Dr. Steve- Yanks, Mets, and BoSox have a ton of blogs too.

More Rumors:
*Denys Reyes may be signed within the next 48 hours and that very well might be with the Phils.

*If not the lefty Reyes then possibly George Sherrill.

*Delwyn Young is also on the radar.

Holy shit. Look at Reyes numbers over his career. He makes JC Romero look like Larry McWilliams.

Rumor is that both may sign with the Phile Sherrill and Reyes. The Lee rumors are interesting but are unlikely. Yohan Flande and another Minor Leaguer (forgot who) got removed from 40 man roster. So we can expect 2 moves to happen soon

I like Juan.

Pirates To Sign Matt Diaz

I don't understand the Pirates. 2 years $8 to Kevin Correia, a starter with a +5 ERA. Then 2 years to Diaz. Diaz is a role player for a contender not some shit club like the Pirates. This is why they'll continue losing for the better part of another decade at least.

Looks like Reyes is almost a sure thing to be a Phillie, just waiting for official word. I like this deal if the money is right.

Also, Amaro continues to stockpile the minors with Quad-A type players (guys that can't hack it full time in the majors but do really well in the minors). Robb Quinlan is the latest to sign a minor league deal after parts of 8 seasons with the Angels. You may recall the Phils at one time employed his older brother Tom.

Pirates can use these guys as trade bait at trade deadline. But they do baffle us at times as they should concentrate on some players that they can build around
