Antidotes

Sweeping Sunday? We'll see. While we wait with bated breath, here are some antidotes to keep your mind busy...
  • Key Match-Ups: Cole Hamels/PHI vs. Clayton Richards/SDP, Josh Johnson/FLA vs. Derek Lowe/ATL, Rodrigo Lopez/ARI vs. Matt Cain/SFG, John Lannan/WAS vs Adam Wainwright/STL.
  • Hollywood Hamels last win was on July 11th and his last win previous to that June 13th. 10 total quality starts in that span with only 2 wins, c'mon offense!
  • Joe Blanton is 3-1 with a 3.41 ERA in nine starts since the All-Star break. He had a 6.41 ERA in 13 starts before the break. He followed a similar path last season. He had a 7.11 ERA after eight starts in 2009, but had a 3.16 ERA in 23 starts the rest of the way. (The Zo Zone)
  • Ryan Howard's .839 OPS ranks 11th in the Majors among firstbasemen. That's pathetic. He was given a massive contract extension and we're already witnessing his decline. Like Corey and I stated from the beginning, this contract is going to become a humongous burden. He's being paid like he's one of the best batters in all of baseball and he's not even in the Top 10 at his own position.
  • Greg Dobbs is batting .140/.401 in Triple-A in 43 at bats. Please just release him from the organization so that there's zero chance of him being recalled in September.
  • Nyjer Morgan assaulted a Phillies fan with a baseball. Mr. Morgan was being heckled by some fans in the outfield (imagine that?) and tossed a ball into the stands striking a man in the temple (not one of the hecklers). Apparently they were teasing his small stature and wearing of the uniform by calling him a jockey. He has since been suspended 7 games, but is appealing. (ESPN)

But Howard is 2nd in Howards and first in game winning Howards. That has to count for something.

I missed the whole Nyger Morgan thing - but WOW that is bad. Howard should note that and next time he sees Scott Barry he should make a throwing error and hit him in the temple too.

Ummm...where was he ranked before the injury?

Prior to injury OPS .884, now it's the whole way down to .839. He's 4-33 (.121) since returning from the DL with 16 k's.

I know, I know, Utley has been terrible too.

Don't want to be accused of being a racist.

Its just a slump, he has been hitting for average alot better this year. He has cut down on K's this year even with the last week K-Fest going on. His average when he makes contact must be great - but he doesn't make contact enough at times.

Noone is worth $25mil a year let alone $10mil. Those salaries drive up prices for everything that we end up paying for. But that is a whole nother arguement

Not accusing you of being a racist...just consider the season Ryan has had: HRs down, BA up, SO were down. then he got hurt. (I recognize there was a mini slump prior to the injury.) Then he gets 1 rehab assignment after not playing for 2 weeks and we're surprised he's batting 4-33? Com'mon.

When players on my team get injured, i don't get excited when they come back early. I can't think of many times when it DOESNT result in diminished production at best, or a return trip to the DL at worst. Utley included.

But to suggest we're watching the decline of Ryan Howard is in the words of the great Mike Tyson, "ludicrisp!"

You guys are just silly about Howard.

He is big and black and has 100 million dollars and is dating an Eagles Cheerleader. 4 things you do not have. I can name 4 more if you like.

Without Howard, this team is pathetic on the Offense Side. Werth has great OPS and tons of doubles, and did not get a hit with a runner in scoring position for over 2 months.

Chase has not shown up this year, and I am hoping he will be back, he is a ghost this year.

With Howard and Pitching this team is first in the Wild Card and on the same Win pace as last year.

Without Howard we are behind the Mets and Marlins. I too believe that in the last year or years of his contract he may not be worth it, but
he is worth the money now.

Do you want playoff contention? Pay Howard. Who else was available to drive in 130+ runs year after year.

Howard is a bargain as long as we are a team that is in contention because of him.

When are you going to rag on the white boys, white boys? Werth and Utley are the players to point fingers at this year.

And I still root for both of them.

You never dished out out to "Pat the Bat" either when he would go oh fer a month.

Count the sentences you have devoted to Utley then count the sentences you have devoted to Howard.

You are also prejudiced against Metro-Sexuals lol You are not against Black or against Metro-Sexuals racist - they are just not part of how you roll... they are not of your Tribe.

We all let people in our tribe get away with things - we give them a pass.

Take Republicans and David Viter, take Democrats and Charlie Rangle.

Take Doctors watching other Doctors screw up or writing themselves prescriptions - they do not turn them in.

The money to Howard did not stop us getting Oswalt.

Howard is not in your Tribe, I am not a Doctor. Enjoy our team being compete for a playoff spot for the 4th year in a row.

Howard was not the problem of this team prior to hurting his ankle.

Looks like you may have 2nd Place!

1) Siralden, please stop lumping Carson and I in one group. We're different people with different opinions.

2) I agree that the contract is bad but I don't necessarily think this slump of Howard's is the beginning of some great decline. However, it is worth noting that his power numbers are down this season. Last year he averaged an extra base hit every 7 at-bats. this year it's every 11. that is a significant difference. if that continues through next season, then we might have an issue.

3) Doctors are allowed to right themselves prescriptions.

4) a few years from now, everyone will see how bad Howard's huge contract is. I'm right about this just like I was right about the Lee trade.

5)"When are you going to rag on the white boys" - that's not funny. and it's not accurate. frankly, you can take that shit elsewhere.

6) "Werth and Utley are the players to point fingers at this year." - werth with his hightest ops of his career, but who cares about facts, right?

During the game yesterday, it showed that Rollins and Utley, over the past four years total, are second and third in runs scored. It's credited to Howard, and rightfully so. He hits the runs in. I don't know what to do about Utley's constant injuries it's not worrying but, why??

As for the contract, I think it's time for the Phillies to become big boys. If Howard's contract ever becomes a problem, and we have the ability to replace him at 1B, trade him to the AL to be a DH and agree to pay part of his contract. We can spend more. We can do things. Howard is not an immovable object.

ACSmitty- I know you weren't accusing me of being racist. You know me on a personal level and knew that's not my agenda. However, I knew Sir Alden was going to come at me and he did.

Sir Alden- go back and check your facts, WSBGMs did plenty of ragging on Pat Burrell. Chase Utley, well that's another matter, he's my favorite player so I will admit my bias towards him. Jayson Werth...give me a break. I may not dedicate posts to him, but in the comment section this season I've blasted him plenty for his lack of the big hit (ie- with runners in scoring position).

Anyway- Howard is supposed to be the man, the main producer, and carries the price tag that goes along with that accountability/responsibility. Therefore, when the Phils are slumping, he gets blamed.

if jayson werth didn't suck so much, that would have been a two-run homer. slacker.

maybe our expectations are just too high, especially when almost all have been on the DL.
