The Phillies are welcoming back two old chums to their clubhouse this spring training. One was a slick fielding, powerful, and mustachioed third baseman that is the best player in Phillies history. The other, a mulleted slap hitting second baseman from the fabled year of 1993. Yep, Mike Schmidt and Mickey Morandini will serve as guest instructors in Clearwater this spring for the Phightins. Wonder what is the bigger draw- molding young players or free booze and accommodations in Florida during the winter. Now, time to break out those glorious baseball cards...
Freddy Guzman has been signed to a minor league contract and is likely destined for Triple A Lehigh Valley. He's an outfielder that has seen MLB time in parts of 4 seasons with the Padres, Rangers, and Yankees batting .211 with no power or on-base skills. The 29 year old has been in 8 organizations, now 9 including the Phils, since being signed as an amateur free agent in 2000. In the minors Guzman racked up 443 stolen bases in 8 seasons while only collecting 823 hits...that's quite the accomplishment depending on how you look at it.
