Danys Baez is a Phillie

32 year old Cuban righthanded Danys Baez is a Phillie, commence celebration. Lifetime record of 35-49 with a 4.04 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 453 games and 613.1 innings. Not bad, not good, just mediocre. He does have 114 saves to his name, so I guess he's at least some sort of insurance plan should JC Romero and Brad Lidge not be ready to start the season (and I'm doubting either will, coming off of elbow surgeries).

Baez has been in the majors for 8 seasons now with the Indians, Devil Rays, Dodgers, Braves, and Orioles. He's been good at times (see all-star '05) and bad at others (see 6.44 ERA with O's in '08). I don't hate the signing, but I don't like it either, guess I'm indifferent. After seeing Rube upgrade backup catcher (Schneider), utility infielder (Castro), ace pitcher (Halladay), and bench (Gload), it's disappointing to have Baez as the lone addition to a very suspect bullpen. Couple that with the fact that it's for a guaranteed 2 years for an undisclosed amount of cash (I'm guessing $5-6M) and that's just not good enough for me. There are still relief pitchers available that fit the Phils needs (Calero, Park, Eyre, Valverde), but something tells me the dealing is done, and youngsters like Bastardo and Escalona will be leaned upon heavily.

*And what the hell is up with the spelling of his name?

The Phillies should stay away from the Orioles in doing business for good. It never turns out well. Remember Andy Van Slyke. That pickup was a waste.

Orioles is actually latin for washed up, overpaid baseball player

Furiousball- that's what I thought, because that bird is a damn mythical creature.

definitely an uninspired signing. oh well. maybe rube thought no one would notice after the Halladay thing. Still a few RPs looking for jobs, so who knows? Maybe a last minute signing for someone like Macdougal.... otherwise, we got the minor leagues for a reason.

in the american legal system, you are innocent until proven guilty. well, the same theory kind of applies to baseball. baez is shitty until proven good. that guy hasn't had a decent season in 5 years. he's shit. the phils don't think so. i say, prove it.

carson, the baltimore oriole, a bird that actually exists, is mythical? does that make the fanatic real?

GM-Carson said...

Have you ever seen an Oriole? Things are more elusive than interview with Steve Carlton.

The Baltimore Oriole (the actual name of the bird) is found in North America from spring to fall while it migrates south to central Amercia during the winter. It leaves the area when it gets cold and since the World Series has been pushed further and further back into Oct/Nov it is unlikely you will see the Baltimore oriole around during the World Series. Atleast they have the color sceme right as the bird is orange/black.

I've actually seen an Oriole in PA before. Beautiful bird.

Email from the Phillies-
"Seeking to add depth to the back-end of the bullpen, the Phillies today signed free agent right-hander Danys Baez to a two-year, $5.25 million contract.

The Phillies will host a press conference today at 2 p.m. ET to announce the signing. You can watch it live on phillies.com.

Baez, 32, went 4-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 59 appearances last season with the Baltimore Orioles. He has 114 career saves, including a career-high 41 saves for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2005, and a 4.04 ERA and in his eight-year career with the Indians, Rays, Dodgers, Braves and Orioles."

*I guessed between $5-6M, I'm pretty good.

the mascot of the Orioles (the actual guy in the costume on the field) came to my best friend's house on the morning of his wedding while we were drinking shots. it was cool. got photos of the Oriole bird pretending to drink a beer. by the way, my best friend lives in Baltimore and is a lifelong O's fan (yes, a few of them do exist)

but thinking about it, I've lived in Maryland for 5+ years and I have never seen an oriole. they ARE elusive.

Andrew- please email us said picture of Oriole mascot with brew in hand.

I'll see what I can do when I get home from work...

I think andrew needs to become another bird phan and that being a phanatic. Also, I want to see the pics of the bird with a brew

Andrew said...

oh I am first and foremost a Phanatic Phan. I just enjoy the O's once in a while since moving to Baltimore since they are ridiculously cheap to see, centrally located stadium, and all my Baltimore friends are O's fans. I would tatoo red pinstripes on my skin, however, if I wasn't scared of needles.

Im not too sure about this guy. But they need a lot besides him to patch up this bullpen for another world series run.

Missed you!

Humor at it's finest, and most succinct.

Now let's take a look at:
Calero, Park, Eyre, Valverde -
and Lidge, Madson, Romero.

Calaro has very nice stats, and
noone in Baseball will touch him
with a ten foot pole. I wonder why? Hmmm... Next.

Park is a hero in South Korea, and wants to start so the babes of his country will be able to
tune in to watch him on a set
schedule. He will not sign with the Phillies. Next.

Eyre, was released by the Cubs,
sucked it up, was great for the
Phillies, then his 37 year old arm fell off (38 this May). Phillies have offered him a contract that is not guaranteed,
to see how the surgery took. Not willing to wait on that, and he still has not signed. Next.

Valverde, aside from his silly macho play acting mound antics, he would be great except for 3 reasons. 1) He wants multi-year north of 6 million to 10 million.
2) He will cost a 1st round draft pick because he is a Type A Free Agent. We need to restock. 3) He wants top closer money to close, not set up, he is not signing.

Brad Lidge - WHIP 1.81 in 2009
Ryan Madson - WHIP 1.23 and he
loses composure under pressure,
pussy supreme.
J.C. Romero - WHIP 1.56 and injured.

Danys Baez - Lead the Orioles with a WHIP 1.13 and 15 Holds the year after his surgery. He is known as a top notch clubhouse guy, Charlie Manuel Managed him as his go to guy early in the his career with the Indians.

When you look into it, and compare it to the other options, I am pulling for him. Looks like a good call - calculated risk, and if it works out, the 2 year contract at low money will seem a genius move.
