Retention, Subtraction, and Additions

Retention:
As expected arbitration eligible players Joe Blanton, Carlos Ruiz, Chad Durbin, and Shane Victorino were tendered contracts. All will receive raises from the previous season. It was a no-brainer to keep Blanton, Chooch, and Vic, but the decision to retain Durbin probably stemmed from Ruben's inability to land any relief help yet. Chad is a good guy, and I welcome him back.

Subtraction:
Clay Condrey was not tendered a contract, and therefore becomes a free agent. He's been with the club for 4 years, and did a decent job in the mop-up role he was given. 16 wins, 161 games, 189.2 innings, and a 3.65 ERA during his time here. I'll miss him.

Additions:
A couple weeks ago I reported on the minor league additions of DeWayne Wise and Wilson Valdez, and today I add some to that list. Former Pirate outfielder Chris Duffy has been invited to spring training. The man looks like a mini-Dykstra, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for Phucco status. Utility infielder Cody Ransom is also a non-roster spring invitee that brings some depth to the organization. He was the Yankees Opening Day starter at 3rd base last year in A-Rod's absence.

Is it just me, or are we not signing players in important roles to help our team?

AKA OUR BULLPEN WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG THERE'S GOING TO BE SHITTY PLAYERS OUT THERE LIKE WE HAD LAST YEAR

Clay is a pitcher who has been getting better the last few years. He even has the make up a closer needs. Hopefully Smoltz will sign with the Phils for the pen, especially with Lidge and Romero possibly being on DL to start season. and if not needed for the pen then a 5th starter.

I think they expect some additions to the bullpen and were willing to release Condrey to make room.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE NON TENDERED LIST THERE ARE SEVERAL GOOD POSSABILITES FOR THE PEN AT BARGAIN PRICES WHICH I'M SURE IS WHAT RUBEN WAS WAITING FOR SINCE THEY DON'T WONT TO OVERSPEND FOR THE PEN AS WADE HAS DONE IN HOUSTON

Check this drivel out from mlbtraderumors.com

"It's just a hunch, but Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com wonders if the Phillies are trying to move Cliff Lee as part of a three or four team trade to land Roy Halladay. The idea is that Lee would get moved to one team for prospects, then Philadelphia would then use those prospects to land Halladay, perhaps keeping some for themselves as well. That would sure be a fun deal."

Rosenthal might have got his daily toke in before he reported this one.

I refuse to talk about that retarded trading Lee to get Halladay bullshit.

I'd love Pocket full of fat Capps in the Phils bullpen...hello Phucco!

Capps and his 5+ ERA? maybe, but there are others out there.

Capps was hurt twice last year. He had great stats all through his career until '09. He's young yet, still plently left, can easily rebound.

Capps seems to be injury prone, but when healthy, he's awesome. If the price is right, would be a good low-risk reliver with closing experience. Definite good signing.

Matt Capps is only 26 years old, and although he did have a 5.80 ERA last year, he still saved 27 games. In his previous 3 full seasons he had ERAs of 3.79, 2.28, and 3.02 with very low WHIPs. Give him 1 year $4M with an option.
