Up 5, 8 To Go

Watching the Phillies recently and you may be inclined to think that they're quite capable of blowing a 5 game lead with 8 games remaining in the season. The bullpen is in shambles, with every pitcher failing in the 9th when given the opportunity or currently unavailable due to injury. The defense is sloppy. The starting pitching is either erratic (Lee) or banged up (Pedro). The top 3 (J-Roll, Vic, & Utley) in the lineup are in a slump (Combined 10-64 over last 5 games). Jayson Werth has 1 hit in his last 24 at bats. To blow this division lead and miss the playoffs would be utterly disgusting and infamously record setting, neither of which I'm hoping to happen. They need just 4 more wins to secure a postseason spot, but just how long is it going to take to get it done?

Today: Joe Blanton vs. Dave Bush in Milwaukee, Derek Lowe vs Livan Hernandez in Washington.

The Phillies have the lead.

And somehow I don't even care?

J-Roll has the bases loaded, and he had a hitter's count. Now it's 3-2.

He keeps popping it up. And now he's struck out.

On the radio yesterday, the radio people chewed out a caller for calling in and saying that J-Roll doesn't hit in clutch situations. That he's tired of seeing J-Roll fail at the plate, especially when they need him.

Frankly, I'm tired of J-Roll. I think it's time we find a new short stop. Fuck him.

Time to watch the end of Transporter 2. Why can't we sign Jason Statham?

i'm pretty sure the rights to jason statham are owned by the cleveland indians but scott boras is his agent, so he's unlikely to sign.

i can't believe i'm saying this, but i agree with wheels. he just pointed out how brewers pitcher chris smith has thrown less than a handful of fastballs yet the phils keep jumping out in front of the offspeed pitches. case in point, three consective pitches resulted in three consecutive pop outs. is this a case of a team pressing a little too hard or just plain poor offensive game planning?

Since it's an opinion question, my opinion is they're pressing, and doing so terribly.

i say it's both.

mat gamel, if he would have K'd in the 8th, would have accomplished the howard as a non-starter and in only 2 innings of play. i doubt either of those have happened but definitely not both together. it would have been quite the trick, but alas...

And then there were 3. I'll take a win any way they give 'em to me at this point.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see No-Hit Nunez on this blog again.
