Welcome Aboard Cliff Lee

Looks like Ruben Amaro Jr. is ready to put his signature on this squad and help guide them back to the playoffs and hopefully back-to-back World Series. He worked his magic and landed 2008 AL Cy Young Cliff Lee and as an added bonus got a righthanded bat in the form of outfielder Ben Francisco. All of this was done without surrendering any players on the active 25-man roster or Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown, or Michael Taylor. Lee and Francisco were brought aboard for a package of Carlos Carrasco, Jason Knapp, Jason Donald, and Lou Marson. Must say, I'm highly impressed.

In:
(2008 stats)
Cliff Lee- 7-9, 22 gs, 152 ip, 107 k, 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 30 years old. $8M club option for 2010.

Ben Francisco- .250/.758, 48 r, 21 dbl, 10 hr, 33 rbi, 13 sb, 27 years old. Under team control through 2012.

Out:

Carlos Carrasco- the much ballyhooed pitcher in the Phils organization for the past few seasons has taken a step back in his progression this season, stalling at Triple-A with a 6-9 record and 5.18 ERA.

Jason Knapp- a 2008 draft pick that is a strikeout machine, 149 k's in 116.1 ip.

Jason Donald- has been injured most of the season, and some question his future as a full-time MLB player. He was roadblocked at SS and 2nd by J-Roll and Utley, and his defensive ability at 3rd is still up in the air.

Lou Marson
- high average, little power backstop. Could be starting in the majors now, but Chooch has that gig in Philly.

Ben Francisco likely takes John Mayberry Jr.'s spot on the roster.

Now the big question remains, who does Cliff Lee bump from the rotation?

Moyer or Lopez?

Riccardi is a total douche. He won't get anything close to the offer the phillies made him for Halladay. What a T

GM-Carson said...

Halladay isn't going anywhere, unless some GM meets his outlandish demands.

More of Cliff Lee-
Lifetime #'s: 83-48, 4.01 ERA, 1117 ip, 826 k, 1.31 WHIP. His ERA would be much lower if not for 2 disastrous seasons out of his 8 so far. He leads the AL in innings pitched this season with 152, averaging 6.9 per start.

More on Ben Francisco-
Lifetime #'s: .261/.332/.437, 123 r, 58 dbl, 28 hr, 99 rbi, 17 sb in 235 games over 3 seasons.

Awesome deal!!!!!!

You make Marson and Knapp sound better than they are. Knapp hasn't faced much real talent, and Marson had that stretch of poor hitting that made me doubt (but still really want to believe) in him.

Dr. Steve said...

But I mean if you're going to be GMs you gotta make the talent you're trading sound awesome don't you?

Lou Marson has done everything he can to prove he can hit, albeit singles. He's hit for a good average the past 2 years in the minors and did an okay job in limited MLB exposure.

Knapp was getting some real hype, and he was a 2nd round pick last year after all.

I am so happy that the Phils got Lee! I posted too. Check me out

If there's one thing I learned from watching "The Pen", it's that Ruben is quite possibly the old school-iest of old school GMs...but does this deal mean they can still flip Happ and one of the minor league OFers for Doc??

GM-Carson said...

Can't afford Doc. Halladay makes close to $16M next season. The Phils already have tons of commitments.

Dr. Steve said...

Is Thome off the books yet? Know of any dead weight coming off them?

I don't want to hear we have too many commitments. Maybe for Halladay, but I don't want money to be an issue for the Phillies.

Gotta hope Lee's 150 innings so far doesn't affect him down the stretch. Otherwise, great deal! I look forward to my 2009 WFC Poster!

Dr. Steve said...

I'll take 150 innings over a staff who pitched into October last year.

GM-Carson said...

Thome, Jenkins, Myers, and Eaton come off the books next year.

However, every single player returning gets a raise for the most part including some hefty ones.

Dr. Steve said...

We can't just self destruct because of raises. This is what it takes to compete.

GM-Carson said...

Getting Lee should be enough. Phils won't part with what it takes to get Halladay. It would take both Happ and Drabek. Too much, no longer needed.

Jayson Stark suggested on ESPN 950 out of Philly that Happ goes back to the bullpen. No f'n way! Happ stays in the rotation. Either Moyer or Rodrigo pitch in relief, with my vote for Moyer. Let Moyer do long relief and barely pitch if need be. I appreciate everything he's done, but he numbers don't lie, he's been pretty bad this season.

GM-Carson said...

This is about to be a big time debate.

Starting pitchers: Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Happ, Moyer, Lopez, and Martinez.

The first 3 are guaranteed spots in rotation. Happ should stay put, because he's been great. Moyer has been constantly up and down, and despite having 10 wins, is nowhere close to being one of our best alternatives for the rotation. Lopez is hot, but how long will it last? I say we keep letting him pitch and find out. Pedro is still a big question mark, and I could easily seem the team bringing him on as a reliever, especially since he said he'd do that if need be.

Dr. Steve said...

Jason Stark is not a Philly guy. He's a fraud. As is that station when Missinelli isn't on.

There's no debate. Moyer leaves the rotation. Lopez and Happ battle to see who gets to be the fourth starter in the playoffs.

And we all give Joe Blanton a HUGE FREAKING HANDSHAKE FOR BEING AWESOME. Seriously, what the hell is this shit? Joe Blanton is awesome, who thought that would happen?

GM-Carson said...

There's a lot of ego and money involved in sending Moyer to the pen.

Dr. Steve said...

There's no money involved. Unless it's in his contract, he'll get paid the same either way. Everyone's getting paid, now put them in the best roles. And Moyer hasn't performed. I want Moyer on the Phillies for a long, long time, as a coach. He can pitch in the bullpen, or when they give pitchers a day off in September, but I can't afford to have him in the rotation. I also can't afford to lose him in the clubhouse and on the staff.

GM-Carson said...

Pirates have been dealing fools too. Sent Jack Wilson and Ian Snell to Seattle, and Freddy Sanchez to San Fran.

I have a lot of updating to do on the 40 man rosters. Probably just wait until after Friday at this point.

Bob D said...

Rumors surround that the Phils are looking for relief/closer help. I dont see that happening as Myers will be back and possible Pedro going to the pen also. We could see in a few weeks a rotation of Hamels, Lee, Blanton, Happ, Martinez.

Ruben still needs to get a utility infielder yet.

GM-Carson said...

Condrey, Durbin, Romero, and to a lesser extent Myers and Pedro are all set to return within weeks to the bullpen. Don't surrender the farm Rube!

GM-Carson said...

Ben Francisco might be under team control for even longer than through '12. I'm just happy Amaro snaked his way into expanding the deal.

Excellent Deal. I heard Amaro got a standing O in the clubhouse yesterday.
