Phillies Phlashback Phriday- July 24, 1999

Ten years ago the Braves and Phillies clashed at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia with the premier pitching matchup of John Smoltz versus Chad Ogea. Phils prevailed 4-3 to bump their record to 53-44 under the guidance of manager Terry Francona.

Phillies Lineup:
1. Doug Glanville/CF
2. Ron Gant/LF
3. Bobby Abreu/RF
4. Kevin Jordan/3B
5. Rico Brogna/1B
6. Marlon Anderson/2B
7. Gary Bennett/C
8. Alex Arias/SS
Pitchers- Chad Ogea, Steve Montgomery, Jim Poole, and Wayne Gomes.

Seriously, Kevin Jordan was our cleanup hitter? Thank Buddha times have changed. For as bad a J-Roll is at times, just remember Alex Arias could be out there instead. From that group of players I really only have fond memories of Glanville and Abreu. By the way, Ogea pitched himself out of the majors that season with the Phils, finishing 6-12 with a 5.62 ERA and 1.51 WHIP...very Eaton-esque. Montgomery got the win, Gomes the save, and Abreu went 3-3 for 2 rbi.

Previous Tale of the Tape for St. Louis. And yes, I still want to slap the Band-Aid wearing dipshit Nelly.

Pitching Matchups- Joel "Call me Joe-L" Pineiro vs JA "Call me Jay" Happ (FRI), Kyle Lohse vs Rodrigo Lopez (SAT), and Todd Wellemeyer vs. Joe Blanton (SUN).

And for your viewing pleasure...

...oh, and she makes some good points about Roy Halladay too.

Carla has a nice pair of..............eyes eh? I agree with her. The Phils could do well with Roy Halladay. What team wouldn't? Well maybe the Pirates. They could do with a few more minor leaguers. At least that what their GM seems to think. Zach Duke is having a good year. Better trade him and Freddy Sanchez while their stocks are high Pirates. What have you got to lose? 100 hundred games? Ah stuff the fans. Sorry people. Back to Halladay. Lets get him sure. He's all-time. The Phils have a need for pitching so why not. I wanna repeat as much as anyone and he would certainly help. And we as Phils phans could do with some fun. How about a Carla streak around the bases. Twice! Nice eyes.

Imagine Halladay in the rotation for the rest of this season and all of next season. Not to get ahead of myself, but I will- I'm thinking threepeat!

I was going to try and be all funny and say how smart Carla is and that she was a lock to become included in the "WSBGM's" lineup...but between her and whoever was filming it they couldn't assert that 32 was retired already? Seriously?

Go back to the beach and keep quiet, honey.

Good post, I just have to say that the video got removed haha. Sorry. I am leaving in like 30 minutes :)

Rico Brogna could pick it at first. You should have fond memories of him.

GM-Carson said...

I have memories of Rico Brogna grounding into double plays.

Competition just got tougher this series with Matt Holliday becoming a Cardinal.

Reverend Paul Revere said...

Rico also drove in mad runs, son. In his three full seasons, 81, 104 and 102 RBIs on a terrible team.

GM-Carson said...

It's a shame Carla took her video down, it was quite amusing.

Brogna was alright, but a 1st baseman with a .750ish OPS isn't all that great.

Reverend Paul Revere said...

No one was all that great back then …

except steve jeltz.

GM-Carson said...

RevPaul- you can like Brogna, I cannot. Like I said, I remember all those GIDP's. 46 in about 500 games.

Some scouts on Happ:
•"This guy has to be the most underrated pitcher in the National League. He's pitching his tail off. He's got the ability to hide the ball and create deception. And he pitches vertical. So even if you're looking fastball, the ball is on you fast. And you see some pretty weak hacks."

•"I've really upped him on my reports. I used to have him as a No. 4 starter, kind of a poor man's Andy Pettitte. Now I think he's a No. 3. I think he's become Andy Pettitte -- and he's actually pitching better than the Andy Pettitte who's pitching for the Yankees."

From Jayson Werth about the Homerun Derby- "I don't know what those guys get if they win. But I think they should get a bag of cash. No, of hundreds. I'm talking about a sack full. Maybe a little leprechaun could carry it out there and throw it at your feet if you win. Then you'd hop in the back of a big Brinks truck and ride away. That would be awesome."

Anyone with the initials J.A.H is gonna kill it right. I'll keep saying it. We can't lose with JAH on our side.

Whatever happens with Doc. Its been alot of years since a guy like him has 'wanted' to go to Philadelphia. The Phils for too long have always been top player repellent not magnet. So whatever happens its nice to know good players now want to be Phillies.

Aaron said...

If they want happ that's deal breaker for me.
If they want taylor and brown that's a deal breaker.
They can have Drabek, Taylor or brown, donald and carrasco.

I do that deal.

Halladay
Hamels
Blanton
Happ
makes me drool.

Aaron said...

How about Utley, Howard, drabek, brown, taylor, knapp, donald, rollins, hamels and bruntlett for Rod Barrajas

Breaking News.........

Vincente Padilla has swine flu. No joke. I hope the whole flotilla isn't infected.

GM-Carson said...

Happ wasn't that good last night, but he wasn't as bad as his line suggests. A lot of little jam-job hits off of him in that rough inning. No matter, Phils offense took the night off.

The switch hitting Nicaraguan has swine flu? Oh, hell no!

GM-Carson said...

Jays want Drabek, Happ, and Brown for Halladay...no thanks!

You can have Drabek and Brown, plus some other guy like Donald, but not Happ too.

Aaron said...

Drabek, Brown, Donald, some schmuck

Do the Deal Ruben!!

Aaron said...

I predict the trade will be....

Happ, Carrasco, Brown, Donald.

I think that's why they signed Pedro because they new Happ was gonna go in the Halliday deal.
Losing happ sucks, but we can win the East without him and when the playoffs come around you may only need a 3 man rotation with all the days off between games.
You could have Halliday and Hamels pitch 5 games in a seven game series.
If the Phils get Halliday without giving up Drabek or Taylor...i will be very happy.

Jay Ballz said...

I love Corey's insight on Charlie Mack...Good memories!

Also, I like it when Ready Rock C gives Jeff a hand.

Bob D said...

The Phils are the only real serious contender in the Halliday trade and can easily outbid anyone. So if Ruben is smart he will wait till the end and then low bid Toronto. Giving up 3 of Happ, Drabek, Taylor, or Brown is unacceptable. Replacing some of them with a lesser yet very good prospects such as Carrasco, Donald, Savery, Carpenter, etc... would be very acceptable.

No other team has the finances and prospects to be able to do this.

Aaron said...

condrey to the DL again to join romero and durbin.
Phils sent down carpenter...not sure why they called him up in the first place.
They called up Kendrick and STEVEN REGISTER??? Who the F is that??

And finally WTF WITH JULIO F'ING LUGO!!! HE IS KILLING US THIS YEAR. CAN WE PLEASE GET THAT F'ER OUT ONE TIME THIS YEAR!!

GM-Carson said...

F'n Ryan Howard. Lopez picks dude off, Howard throws it into leftfield while run scores. How about striking out again douche?!

Dr. Steve said...

The Phillies need bullpen help too, at this rate. I wouldn't mind a good bullpen pitcher and a decent one to go with the Halladay trade. Taylor has to stay with the Phillies above all.

LOL! Nice Phlashback. Chad Ogea. Alex Arias. Hhahahahahah. It wasn't a few years later until Desi Reliford took over!
