Saves, Homeruns, Minors, & Vegetarians

Lights Out Lidge Returns:
It took Brad Lidge only 4 pitches to retire the Padres 1-2-3 in the 9th inning last night for his 13th save of the season. This is Lidge’s 2nd 1-2-3 save in a row. Over his last 5 outings (all saves), he’s thrown 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out 5, walking only 1 batter, allowing only 1 hit, and dropping his ERA from 9.15 to 7.40.

Homeruns & K’s:
Ryan Howard went deep for the 15th time on the season last night and struck out 4 times. It’s the 13th time in his career he’s hit a homerun in a game while striking out 4 times. That’s nearly unbelievable.

Homerun Happy:
For the first time in franchise history, Phillies teammates have hit 10+ homeruns in the same month. Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez accomplished this feat in May. Hard to believe Rich Schu and Steve Jeltz never did this.

Bases Loaded:
Ryan Howard broke Mike Schmidt’s franchise record for career grand slams this past weekend. It got my wife wondering just how many chances did Schmidty have with the bases juiced during his career compared to Howard. She asked and I delivered…

Ryan Howard: 71 plate appearances, 19 hits (.297 avg), 3 doubles, 8 homeruns, 68 rbi, 1.046 OPS.

Mike Schmidt: 197 plate appearances, 54 hits (.331 avg), 9 doubles, 3 triples, 7 homeruns, 155 rbi, .913 OPS.

Congratulate Cooch:
It's time to give Carlos Ruiz some props. Not only is he batting .305 with a .930 OPS, the man has thrown out 45.5% of base stealers.

For What It's Werth:
With tough right Jake Peavy on the mound tonight, it would be a wise decision to bench the struggling Jayson Werth in favor of homerun swining extraordinaire Matt Stairs. Since May 19th, Werth has gone 7-52 (.135 avg) with 16 strikeouts.

Minor News:
*Mike Koplove exercised his June 1st out clause and has elected to become a free agent, thus leaving the Phillies organization. Gary Majewski has the same option, but it appears he’s going to remain with the club.

*Kyle Drabek was promoted to the Double-A Reading Phillies.

*With Antonio Bastardo getting the call-up today, John Mayberry Jr. has been optioned back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

*Sergio Escalona remains in the bullpen through tonight, but will also be sent down once JC Romero is free from his 50 game suspension which ends tomorrow. Looks like the Phils will go with a 13 man pitching staff and a 3 man bench for the time being until they figure out what to do.

Get Your Veggie On:
A representative from PETA sent us an email about the Phillies vegetarian ballpark fare. “For the third straight year, Citizens Bank Park, home of the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, leads the pack in PETA's annual rankings of the top 10 vegetarian-friendly ballparks. This the first time since PETA began the rankings in 2002 that a ballpark has won three years in a row. With the addition of the new Southwestern black bean burgers and faux crab cake salad to a lineup that already featured faux Philly-style steak and chicken sandwiches, veggie dogs, and meatless wraps, CPB was a shoo-in. And ranking number one with PETA could portend good things for the Phils: After receiving a first-place ranking from PETA last year, the team went on to win the World Series!” *Little do they know, Corey and I love us some grilled dead animal.

I guess Peavy REALLY wants to avoid any Philadelphia Trade Talks to the point he's willing to lose the game.

Scouting report had Bastardo at 89-91, but dude was whipping it up there at 94-95 in the 1st.

Peavy has a bum ankle.

Chan Ho is in with a 10-1 lead... and I'm nervous. Why is he on the team?

The Bastard wins and Ibanez continues his epic season. Phils on a nice streak.
