The Washington Nationals should be fearing for their lives when they timidly tip-toe on to the field tonight against Joe Blanton and the Philadelphia Phillies. Joe Blanton is hungry, hungry for a win!In touch with the mound,
I'm on the hunt, I'm after you.
Fastball zips with sound,
I'm cheered by the crowd,
And I'm hungry like the wolf.
Straight zeroes are my line,
On batters I dine,
I'm on the hunt, I'm after you.
My bat is alive, World Series juices vibe,
And I'm hungry like the wolf!
WSBGM's is attributing the 3 game sweep of the Marlins to the power of the Golden Girls, so here's our parting gift today...

there will be blood
Good:
Werth's lack of strikeouts are very pleasing. I thought he'd challenge Howard now that he's playing every day.
Eyre is doing far better than I envisioned.
Howard's defense continues to make me smile, along with his decent batting average. The power will come.
Bad:
Dobbs needs a start or two against some righties in the upcoming week(s).
Jimmy is alarming. His eye is horrible, nearly everything he hits is weak, we need him at the top of the order over the long haul.
Miguel Cairo is worthless and should not be on this team. The sooner Amaro replaces him the better.
I know there are many Coste defenders out there (and don't get me wrong I like the guy), but he looks bad right now. His defense is sagging, his bat is slow, he just looks shot.
agreed about Coste. When Ruiz returns, call up Marson, send down Coste. His trade value isn't that high. Then get rid of Cairo since Manuel doesn't seem to like him much. I understand pinch-hitting is hard and he's only had like 8 opportunities, but Manuel always always goes for Dobbs and Stairs first, as he should. Call up Mayberry or Donald.
I may be exaggerating, but I think Cairo has made an out on the first pitch of his at bat 7 out of the 8 times he's pinch-hit. That's bringing pathetic to a whole new level.
First, thanks for showing me to your blog!
Second, I would absolutely love to see Donald called up. My family and I are big fans of his. He has the same name as my older brother, so it was funny to hear his name during spring training. In fact, we got a few calls from people asking if it was my brother...pretty funny. But besides that, I think he's got a lot of potential and would love to watch him in the show. I think he's got a great head on his shoulders and would fit in well with the rest of the team.
I understand why Mayberry, Donald, and soon likely Marson will be at Triple A while Miguel Cairo continues to suck at the MLB level. The Phils want Marson, Donald, and Mayberry to be getting regular at bats and play everyday. However, Coste has looked bad while Marson has looked good (albeit small sample size). Cario provides less hope of getting a pinch-hit than our pitchers would, so Amaro needs to find a replacement from outside the organization or bring Donald up.
The power of the Golden Girls will bring us another sweep.
I love what the Golden Girls have done for this team. Just think, before they made an appearance on this blog, the Phillies were in fourth place in the NL East.
Duran Duran is gay, though.
Duran-Duran is gay? Those Brits got all the fly hunnies back in the 80's.
This Golden Girls count is rather confusing. But this is also the first week we play the same team (we did play the Nats, right?) so no Tale of the Tape :(
I agree the Cairo doesn't really do anything for this team. I saw today that Ray Durham is still a free agent. Wouldn't he be an upgrade of Cairo?
A weathered dog turd that's lost its coloring would be an upgrade over Cairo.
JC is suing. Check out Lauber's blog for the details. I hope JC wins that one because he is innocent and deserves redemption.
Watching Jack Taschner pitch is absolutely terrifying if you're a Phillies fan. There's no reason to have him as the third (!) lefty out of the pen. I don't know...DFA the guy and hope that you can get someone to give you a couple of bucks for him.
Other comments: Jimmy's struggles are indeed scary, but you could also think of it as: "The Phils are doing decent without him. When he wakes up, they could light on fire". Not the soundest reasoning, I know, but it's at least heartening that the Phils are not falling apart without "good Jimmy".
I haven't actually seen a Cairo AB so far (not that there have been a ton of them, of course), but in general, I agree...the guy is done. The only question is whether you want to (probably) slow down Mayberry's or Donald's development by bringing them to the majors where they will get much fewer ABs than they would in the minors.
Condrey just walked in a run. Please get Taschner off this team after the game. Please.
Also, the Natties have stranded 8 runners through 6 innings. The Phils are lucky to be in this game.
And finally: I hope JC nails the hell out of those lying dogs who sold him that crap. I hope he gets back every single dollar he lost due to the suspension, not to mention a million or so for defamation of character. That entire situation makes me angry as hell, I'm going to try to not think about it.
Wow. Ibanez is awesome. I'd have been waiting to get walked, and he takes a first pitch GRAND. SLAM. Wow.
Pat who?
This game is amazing. The Phils pitching has been horrendous, but the Gnats has been worse. 2 grand slams, hot damn! Raul Ibanez is being a folk lore hero in Phillie, he's better than I imagined possible.
Lidge needs to lock it down here in the 9th.
Golden Girls Power!!!
Back in early November when it was clear Pat wasn't going to be re-signed, I mentioned to my friends and on some blogs (maybe this one) that the Phils would be a great fit for Ibanez.... most people said no thank you back to me. Any questions now?
Why did Madson close it out? He looked real good though.
