Brett Myers- Fallback Plan

Last night FedEx delivered me one of the best packages I've ever received- 2 Opening Night tickets to the Phillies vs. Braves on April 5th. It appears Chase Utley will be in the lineup with the rest of the regulars, so I should be a happy boy. But then there's this news about Cole Hamels from the mouth of Rich Dubee- "Opening Day is probably a long shot, just because we've got to get him up and running. We've got to stretch him out. I think he's been up to 52 or 54 pitches. We like our guys, if they're going to pitch, hopefully they'll be ready to throw 100 pitches by Opening Day. It could be a long shot. Again, this guy has always risen to the occasion. It's good that we caught it when we did. It wasn't getting cleared up. It wasn't getting any worse, but it wasn't getting any better."

This of course means Brett Myers is the fallback plan to open the season, just as he was last year (for a different reason). I'm just hoping Good Brett shows up. He is primed for a huge season, as it's a contract year, he's lost significant weight this offseason, and is focused solely on being a starting pitcher. In yesterday's Grapefruit action he went 5.2 innings, while only allowing 4 hits, no runs, and striking out 7. That's a pretty good safety net.

Sam- what?

This would be Myers 3rd consecutive opening day assignment should Hamels not be ready.

Jimmy Rollins had 2 stolen bases and Vic was 3-4 in last night's WBC game against Puerto Rico. JC Romero got the loss, given up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th.

I don't trust Brett Myers. Ever. Hell, in the playoffs he had two great games and then lost the third.

The Phillies, ever since Manuel took over, have helped restore my faith in a team... and yet then they pull it away. There was a time when Howard was up to bat in a clutch situation, I wasn't nervous at all - and he'd deliver. Then he got a statistic named after him. This applies for most Phillies players.

It's tough. But hopefully Brett Myers will pull it out, and put his streakyness behind him. What were his stats earlier in the Grapefruit League? Oh... really? Shit.

I bet all the random ladies hope Brett "pulls it out" too. That can mean many things, I'll leave interpretation up to the reader.
