I've referred to Brett Myers as Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde or even Bad Brett/Good Brett in the past, this all being due to the fact that he's a tumultuous topsy-turvy tease. Yesterday in a "B" game against the Toronto Blue Jays Bad Brett went 3 innings allowing 6 hits, 2 walks, 2 homeruns, and 5 runs total...not what you want from your #2 starter. Cause for concern? This is the type of game he was pitching during the first half last season- 5.84 era with 24 homers surrendered in 101.2 innings. We need Good Brett of the second half- 3.06 era and only 5 bombs given up in 88.1 innings. The truth is Myers has always been a roller coaster over the course of a season, dominating one month, then seemingly losing it altogether the next month. As fans we've come to expect it, and expecting anything different would be foolish. So, hop aboard the Myers Roller Coaster. Please remove any loose objects, secure the safety harness, and remember to keep arms in the car at all times...have fun!
Today in Phils History:
*1995- Richie "Whitey" Ashburn was selected by the Veteran's Committee to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
*1998- reliever Toby Borland was signed for a 2nd stint with the Phils. If you remember, he was the main trading chip that brought us Rico Brogna via the Mets. Thanks a lot of Toby!
*Happy birthday Keith Miller. I never knew he even played for the Phightins, but in fact he did back in 1988 and '89. He's just not the same Keith Miller of Mets and Royals fame that I recall.
*In last night's "A" game, Chan Ho Park made his best pitch for 5th spot in the rotation, tossing 4 innings of 3 hit, 1 run ball. Reliever Gary Majewski continues his strong bid for the bullpen going 2 shutout innings (now with 6 ip, 6 k, and 0.00 era on the spring). Geoff Jenkins collected 3 rbi, Greg Dobbs had 2 hits, and Pablo Ozuna is making a push for a bench spot batting .583. In the end the Phils lost 4-3 to the Jays, falling to 3-4 in Grapefruit action.
*Team USA vs. Team Canada in the WBC tournament this afternoon at 2 pm, coverage on ESPN.
