Readers requested, well actually only one reader- Bob D, an interview with some of the Philadelphia Phillies Ball Girls and WSBGM's delivered. Returning ball-shagger Laura and newbie Danielle took time from being hounded by the Phanatic to answers some questions. Enjoy...
1. What's the most exciting thing about being a Phillies Ball Girl?
There are so many things that are exciting about being a Phillies ball girl. I love that we get to have a positive impact on the lives of fans young and old, we play softball games for charities, and we get to be surrounded by the best fans in all of sports!!
2. What all duties does your job entail?
We have many different roles as a ball girl. We play in softball games to raise money for Phillies Charities, we make public appearances at all sorts of events throughout the Philadelphia area, and obviously we field foul balls and give them to fans.
3. How crazy was the World Series celebration?
The World Series was an experience I will never forget. I was actually on the field for game five. The sea of white towels in the air was a sight I will never forget. I think I had goosebumps the entire game! I couldn’t even sit in my chair by the 9th inning. I was up and ready to celebrate once that final pitch was thrown.
4. Who is the hottest Phillies player?
Hmmm…. That either goes to Chase Utley or Greg Dobbs. Tough decision.
5. Are you any good at baseball?
When I was young I was such a tomboy so I actually grew up playing baseball with the boys from the age of 7 to 13. I definitely remember making a lot of boys cry when I would hit a homerun off of them.
6. Have you ever been booed for botching a play on a foul ball, and how did it feel?
I am proud to say that I have not made an error on the field (I hope I didn’t just jinx myself!)
7. Any advice for the rookie ball girls?
My advice for the rookie ballgirls is to enjoy every minute of this awesome experience. It is truly a ride you will never forget! It flies by so fast and before you know it the season will be over so soak it all in!
8. Any dissension among the Ball Girl ranks...ya, know, cat fights?
To be honest, we all get along so well. We truly enjoy the company of each other. We all share the same interests so there is something always exciting to talk about!
9. Coolest in game experience?
No doubt about it…. being on the field for game five and witnessing history. Being a Phillies fan my entire life it doesn’t get any better than that!!
10. What are you eagerly anticipating now that you're a Phillies Ball Girl?
I can't wait for the 2009 season to start! I'm really looking forward to what being a Phillies ballgirl has to offer - from the Home Games, to our softball games (yes - we are a softball team!), to being able to represent the WORLD CHAMPIONS! I'm so excited to be a part of this organization and to be able to get to know the other ballgirls.
11. What made you want to become a Phils Ball Girl?
Actually, my mom encouraged me to tryout to be a Ballgirl. I'm a HUGE Phillies fan - and last year I was fortunate enough to have an internship with one of my other favorite Philadelphia teams, the Philadelphia Eagles - and the atmosphere of working for an organization that you are also a fan of is incredible! Everyone around you shares the same desire and passion for your city's team that it makes working for them even greater. Since I'm also a softball player, being able to represent the Phillies organization as young woman athlete in a sport I'm also crazy about is icing on the cake. I couldn't ask for a more perfect job. It's the best of both worlds.
12. You're a newbie, so do you have any fear of jinxing the Phils' mojo?
Oh gosh - I sure hope not!
13. Many girls tried out for a few open spots, what made you stick out from the rest?
I'm really passionate about the Phillies and softball (I played Division I Softball at La Salle University for the last 3 years), so I think that maybe my drive to be a ballgirl and love of the sport stood out from the other girls - but then again, there were 1600 applicants! So, I think a little luck was on my side, too! :)
14. Can you attend a WSBGM's tailgate party this season? If so, bring friends!
Sure! Sounds like a blast - let me know where and when!
15. Are you nervous to take the field for the first time?
Of course I'm nervous - who wouldn't be?! I think it's going to be a great experience that I'll never forget. It's definitely an amazing and rare opportunity!
