The Phillies Purse

The Philadelphia Phillies purse strings have been opened wide this offseason. GM Ruben Amaro has busted out the big bucks for young arbitration eligible talent. Ryan Howard 3 years $54M, Cole Hamels 3 years $20.5M, Ryan Madson 3 years $12M, Jayson Werth 2 years $10M, and Greg Dobbs 2 years $2.5. That's a total of $99M...a far cry from the penny-pinching Phils of yesteryear. This should please the players, the organization, and the fans. I applaud Rube for attacking the situation and pounding out a "reasonable" contract for the players listed above. He may have overshot the mark in the free agent market, but he has done well dealing with players that were already on the roster.

whats unbelievable is that we've increased our payroll more than the Yankees! They basically broke even!

Looks like Rich Aurilia is returning to the Giants on a minor league deal. Righthanded bench bats disappearing.
