Dismantling a Champion

Ruben Amaro Jr. has been at the helm for only a few days and he's already dismantling the team. Last week trusty reliever Tom Gordon and pinch-hitting specialist So Taguchi had their options bought out and will not be returning in 2009. Just yesterday bullpen stalwart Rudy Seanez opted for free agency and is likely not invited to a reunion in spring training with the team. Reliable lefty Les Walrond with pinpoint control was claimed off of waivers by the Great North (Toronto Blue Jays) and was added to their 40 man roster. That leaves a hole big enough to drive Jon Lieber's gas-guzzling truck through in the bullpen. Putting the sprinkles on top of this crap flavored ice cream cone is the fact that genius 3rd base coach Steve Smith will not be returning to wave and hold runners next season. How will we ever replace these great men? What's next, swapping Utley and Howard for the rights to negotiate with a Japanese player or waiving Cole Hamels? C'mon Rube!

Rumors:
*Phils are hot and heavy over minor league lifer and seldom producing big leaguer Pete Orr. Not sure why, we already have the bearded bastard Eric Bruntlett for utility player and Jason Donald is waiting in the wings.

*Phils are being listed as potential suitors for ameteur Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa. No word if he is of the performance caliber of countryman Kazuhito Tadano.

*Colorado Rockies Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins are both on the Phillies radar, but each will come with a price tag of a zillion prospects.

Holliday would be a good replacement for Burrell, but I doubt the Phillies will pony up enough for him ... also, they have some decent minor league prospects ... we'll see, I guess.

Holliday for one season isn't worth trading away all of our top-tier talent in the minors. That's just my personal opinion. Although, he would be a tremendous replacement for Burrell in the outfield.

I'm gunning for Raul Ibanez if Burrell walks. He's very consistent and has plenty of power.

what is jason donald waiting in the wings for? not to play shortstop, seeing that JRoll is locked in there. and i would be skeptical of using a guy who hasn't had a single major league AB and has played every single inning of his professional career at SS as the utility infielder for the defending world champions.

What about Greg Golson? What do you forsee him being used for this season?

GM-Carson said...

I hope Greg Golson doesn't make the team. He has no plate discipline and MLB pitchers will exploit his weaknesses that he won't even bat .200 or have an on base % close to that either. He's fast and has pop when he makes contact, but that doesn't happen too often.

I really like Jason Donald, and I know he has zero MLB experience, but he's playing 2nd, SS, and 3rd in the Arizona Fall League which leads me to believe the Phils are grooming him to be a utility infielder "waiting in the wings" to take over for Eric Bruntlett, not one of the starters.

Like other commenters, I'd really like to see some of our guys that are already in the system fill these needs and focus some free agent dollars on the starting rotation (including keeping gramps)

NONE OF THESE LOOK GOOD AT ALL

WHAT THE FUCK

The Phillies should be going after FREE AGENTS with HUGE PILES OF CASH. Not going after 1 year contractors with piles of talent. Most years I would rather the Phillies make zero trades because, with the exception of Brad Lidge, we end up giving away more talent in any offseason trade we make.

And it seems Ruben was groomed in this method and doesn't want to break from tradition.

If "the machine" can't be kept for next season, my wish list starts with Magglio Ordonez. Detroit is supposedly trying to salary dump him, and with burrell and gordon off the books in this scenario, money is something the phillies have.

They are also desperate for pitching in detroit. Think maybe if we give Eaton plastic surgery they might accept him?

GM-Carson said...

The only reason Magglio gets traded is to clear payroll and when that is done, the team doesn't usually get a ton in return (ie. Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle for the Yankees pile of crap in '06). Detroit wants pitching and catching and possibly a shortstop. I'd make some combo of Golson, Kendrick, Happ, Coste, Jaramillo, and Bruntlett available.

Totally unrelated, but...

Regardless of how you voted, at least the Phils were decently represented:

454 write-in votes for the Phillies...awesome! But why the hell are they listed as Libertarians?

You have got to be kidding.Steve Smith blows.I had a shot to celebrate this bit of good news.Good riddance to a horrible coach. Can we get his ring back and give it to Chris Snelling??? You can't honestly be sad about losing Taguchi and Trash Gordon.Did I miss the sarcasm?Seanez..eh.I'm a fan so I guess that sucks. But c'mon. These are basically inconsequential moves and the firing of Steve Smith is awesome. (BTW I am permanently banned from yardbarker.Screw those a**holes. The parade was a little dissappointing but the overall experience rocked.Septa Regional Rail can fu*k off, though.

Incidentally,I was at Chickies and Petes for the stadium celebrations.JRoll had a mixed bag of cheers and boos. His overall season, including and ESPESCIALLY the post season was lame.I expect he will begin mouthing off in an attempt to force a trade a la Scott Rolen very soon. One year wonder anyway so screw 'im.

Anyone else notice they only had eight port-a-johns at Broad and Pattison on Friday?C'mon Philadelphia. My girl had to piss behind a frickin' bush.Me,I whizzed on a tree.In front of a cop.He was doin' it,too.

Great to see Seanez is leaving. The cream goes to the top and the crap sinks to the bottom and leaves via the drain. Seanez, Gordon, So, Steve Smith, hopefully Eaton, too...all crap going out the drain pipe.

I don't want Magglio replacing Pat the Bat. I'd rather see a cheap young prospect out there shagging balls, running bases and striking out at the plate.

The Libertarian getting presidential votes is George Phillies of New Hampshire. I think if you had the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies on the ballot, they would have pulled in more votes than a measly 450 votes. Hell, I would have voted for the Philadelphia Phillies if they were on my ballot... a lot better than the knuckleheads I had to choose from.

The Phillies get 470 election votes!!!

My off season wish list is this sign Burrell, sign Moyer, sign Eyre and come back with essestially the same damn team. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

We are World Fucking Champions, we shouldn't change anything.

Let Happ, Kendrick and Carasco fight it out for the 5th starter, let Marson and Coste fight it out for backup catcher.

That's it.

Out with the bad air - in with the good.

Matt Cain for J-Roll is in the works. Interesting. The Phillies must love McDonald.

GM-Carson said...

I'd be so pissed if the Phils traded J-Roll. Matt Cain is a nice young pitcher, but J-Roll is a top-notch shortstop and clubhouse leader.
